Iga Świątek’s Ukrainian nightmare? The ruined birthday is remembered

Iga Świątek had to wait a while, considering that the Pole returned to the competition only in Toronto. Only earlier did the tennis player play in an official match at Wimbledon. Unfortunately, the championship title could not be defended in London. Świątek was eliminated in the third round at Wimbledon.

The Pole won one more match in another Grand Slam tournament this year, specifically in Paris.

Defeat in the capital of France, on the tennis courts. Roland Garros is, in fact, particularly painful for Świątek every time. It was no different in the case of the 2026 edition. However, it should be added that the Pole played her fourth round match on May 31, i.e. on her birthday. There was no joy after the last ball, the mood was spoiled by Marta Kostiuk, who was better that day.

However, sports life abhors a vacuum, so both ladies will meet on Saturday (i.e. August 8) on the court in Toronto. The Canadian WTA 1000 tournament will be an opportunity for a rematch for Świątek. Will the Pole be able to outplay Kostiuk?

What is Kostiuk’s attitude towards competing with Świątek again?

– I definitely had a very good victory against her in Paris. I’m very curious what Iga will change in the next match. I will also see what changes I make. However, you must remember that it is a hard court and there was clay. Different surface, different game. I think it will be a great match. I’m excited just thinking about him. I can’t wait to play with her on the hard court again, admitted the Ukrainian during a press conference in Toronto.

From Świątek’s perspective, it seems that this match may be of key importance at the end of the 2026 season. Kostiuk is currently the tennis player number 11 in the WTA ranking. In the case of the Polish woman, she is talking about the eighth position. Therefore, it is very close, and this type of check can have a motivating effect on both tennis players.

Świątek is looking solid in Canada. Kostiuk, however, had the opportunity to test herself in the third round against Madison Keys – a big name. However, the Ukrainian easily defeated the American 6:3, 6:1. It must be impressive.

The Polish-Ukrainian clash in Toronto promises to be a really interesting clash.
