Iga Świątek’s nightmares are back! A huge blow to Wimbledon

There is no doubt that Iga Świątek is at a point in the season where the pressure is really high. The Pole is still looking for her first chance to play in the decisive phase of any tournament of the 2026 campaign.

One could have hoped that such a breakthrough would take place in Bad Homburg. On German grass courts in 2025, Świątek reached the final of the event. Even the loss to Jessica Pegula was not a problem at that time, taking into account the upcoming Wimbledon Grand Slam.

This time the Pole also lost to the American. However, it happened… already in the first match of the tournament for Świątek.

The tournament number 1 of the event had to struggle with big problems from the very beginning. The American, world number 24, started with a 3-0 lead in the opening set. The Pole couldn’t find her right rhythm, there were many mistakes, and Świątek couldn’t get a good shot with her own pass.

However, when the number 3 in the world managed to control her emotions, the Pole managed to equalize the score to 5:5 and the match basically started from the beginning. Once again, however, Navarro seemed much calmer than Świątek. Above all, the American was able to finish important balls at key moments. And even if there was pressure from the favorite, a mixture of skill and a pinch of luck allowed the US representative to be a little more “in front”.

After the first set, which was ultimately lost 5:7, in the second set the score was 2:2 – we saw the kind of Świątek that Polish fans would certainly like to see. The 25-year-old player stopped making her own mistakes and played a bit safer, but still effective. Coach Francisco Roig had reasons to applaud his player’s performance at this time. Effect? Świątek won confidently 6:2 in 35 minutes.

But what good is it, since in the third set Navarro was once again a few steps ahead of the Pole. It started with a significant break of Świątek’s serve at the first opportunity, to 2-0. The third game, extremely important because the Polish woman had several chances to break back, was ultimately eliminated by Navarro. The American also had some luck, but in this case it seems that it simply favored the better player.

Having a 3-0 lead, Świątek’s opponent took this minimal but decisive advantage of one break to the end. Finally closing the third game with a score of 6:3.

For the Pole, this is a big blow before Wimbledon, because the visit to Bad Homburg was Świątek’s first opportunity to play on a grass court. Plus, you will have to take into account the significant loss of ranking points. Świątek played in the final last season, but here she was eliminated – as we mentioned earlier – in the first match.
