Iga Świątek’s knockout. No one predicted such a scenario!
Iga Świątek finished the WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing in the fourth round. The Pole lost to the American Emma Navarro 4:6, 6:4, 0:6.
It must be admitted that, especially from the perspective of a Polish tennis player, the scale of the loss in the third set was shocking. In fact, after two equal games, there was no indication that the decisive game would end with such a one-sided result. Usually, the Pole won 6:0 or 6:1, but this time she had to swallow the bitterness of defeat, without winning a single game on her serve.
WTA 1000 Beijing: Iga Świątek defeated by Emma Navarro. A surprising finish to the match!
Both ladies spent exactly 2.5 hours on the court. It was a match of many twists and turns. On the one hand, Iga Świątek tried to impose her playing style, showing off more than twice as many finishing shots. In the ratio 35:12 in favor of the Polish woman.
On the other hand, Emma Navarro did not make as many mistakes as the second-ranked Polish tennis player and seeded number 1 in Beijing. Świątek may have a lot to complain about here. In total, the Pole made as many as 70 (!) unforced errors, with only 21 from the American. It’s so hard to think about winning and advancing to the quarterfinals of a WTA 1000 event.
Interestingly, Navarro has not been able to win a single match against the Pole so far. However, the American is a top player in the WTA rankings, currently ranking 17th. Therefore, it was known that Świątek did not have an easy match ahead of her, especially since the Polish player appeared on the court often in the last dozen or so days. In addition to her presence in Beijing, the second-ranked player in the world ranking previously played at the WTA 500 in Seoul, where she won the final victory.
Could this have influenced the fate of Wednesday’s match in the Chinese capital? Maybe. Although the Polish woman’s will to fight cannot be denied. Świątek especially pulled out the second set, pressing Navarro hard. However, she started the third game with her service game at 0:40. And although the score was 40:40, the American lost the break after the advantage play. In the next games there was a chance to break her opponent, but Navarro was able to withstand the pressure. And the increasing irritation of the Polish player meant that one break turned into three in total and a sad 0:6 after 40 minutes of play in the third set alone. This therefore shows that the result does not fully reflect the course of the decisive party.
Iga Świątek and all her championship titles
In her career so far, the Pole has won a total of 25 championship titles on courts almost all over the world.
Świątek won six Grand Slams, four times at Roland Garros (2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024), once at the US Open (2022) and Wimbledon (2025). To this should be added the prestigious triumph in the WTA Finals (2023).
In addition, wins in WTA 1000 tournaments in: Rome (2021, 2022, 2024), Doha (2022 and 2024), Indian Wells (2022 and 2024), Miami (2022), Beijing (2023), Madrid (2024) and the most recent one in Cincinnati (2025).
The list also includes WTA 500 competitions: Adelaide (2021), Stuttgart (2022 and 2023), San Diego (2022), Doha (2023) and Seoul (2025). Plus a Polish accent, WTA 250 in Warsaw (2023).
After the Olympic tournament in Paris (2024), a bronze medal of the Games should be added to this list. The first disc in the history of Polish Olympics taken from competition on tennis courts. Although, as the tennis player herself mentioned, after winning Wimbledon, if she could, she would exchange one of her Grand Slam wins – for Olympic gold.
