Iga Świątek’s former coach strikes back! A surprising move ahead of Roland Garros
Wim Fissette will want to perform well during the tournament in Paris. His new protégé – Canadian Victoria Mboko – has huge potential.
As for the Belgian trainer, in the last several months his figure has been associated mainly with Iga Świątek. The Pole entered into a relationship with him in October 2024. It was the first foreign coach for the best Polish tennis player in her career so far.
Wim Fissette stepped into Tomasz Wiktorowski’s shoes. The challenge for the Belgian was certainly considerable.

Did the Belgian-Polish connection ultimately work out? It is difficult to say clearly, but Świątek’s victory in the legendary Wimbledon in 2025 was certainly a great result. On the other hand, the Pole did not manage to win on the tennis courts. Roland Garros in the same season – losing to Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-finals.
Fissette’s separation from the Polish woman took place at the end of March 2026. The Belgian did not have to wait long for a new job. Fissette appeared at Victoria Mboko’s training sessions. The Canadian is a great talent who quickly rose to the top of the world. At just 19 years old, Mboko is already in the top ten of the WTA rankings.
Already during the May tournament in Strasbourg (WTA 500), the Belgian’s hand in the Canadian’s game was visible. Mboko moved better on the clay court and was more patient in her game, not relying only on quick “shots”, i.e. either a winner or an unforced error and a point in favor of her opponent.
The Canadian reached the final of the event, losing only in the title game to the more experienced American Emma Navarro. This is certainly a good prognosis for RG 2026.
The Parisian meal is certainly better known to Świątek, compared to Fissette’s current protégé. The Pole has already won her first victory in this year’s edition of the Grand Slam in Paris. Mboko will play for the first time at RG 2026 on Tuesday (i.e. May 26).
Is Fissette preparing a counterattack and will he want to outplay his former protégé? Mboko definitely has the potential to do big things. However, Świątek feels very good in Paris. If the two tennis players were to meet, the clash would take place – according to the tournament ladder – at the earliest in… the final of the event in Paris.
Roland Garros 2026. Where and when to watch the tournament in Paris?
It is worth recalling that Iga Świątek won the Grand Slam event in the French capital four times. The Pole won for the first time in 2020. Then Świątek truly “introduced herself” to a wider audience.
Successes in the form of wins on the courts. The best Polish tennis player also repeated Roland Garros in 2022, 2023 and 2024. Last season, Świątek reached the semi-finals of the event, losing to Aryna Sabalenka after a three-set match. However, the Belarusian did not win the cup in Paris, because it ultimately fell to the American Coco Gauff. The US tennis player will therefore defend her championship title.
The list of Świątek’s successes in Paris also includes the Olympic medal, which the Pole won during the 2024 Games. Although the “Queen of Paris” was the main favorite for the Olympic gold medal, the Polish representative ultimately won the “consolation” in the form of a bronze medal. Looking at history, the first tennis event in the history of the Polish Olympic movement – which is certainly worth noting.
RG 2026 matches are shown on Eurosport, on a total of four channels of the station. Additionally, the online competition is available via the HBO Max platform. The competition in the main tournament is scheduled from May 24 to June 7.
