Iga Świątek with an important victory. The Pole reversed the script!

Iga Świątek

Iga Świątek started the tournament in Madrid (WTA 1000) with a victory. In her first match, she won against Ukrainian Daria Snigur 6:1, 6:2.

The Pole was the clear favorite of the Thursday (i.e. April 23) fight. Daria Snigur is currently the tennis player number 98 in the WTA ranking. For comparison, the Pole can boast of 4th place.

And the difference was definitely visible on the court. The Pole won in two sets 6:1, 6:2, having only minimal problems in the opening of the second set. The Ukrainian started with 2-0, unexpectedly breaking the Polish team.

Świątek, however, has since reversed the set scenario, from 0-2 to 6-2 and closed the match with a very confident victory.

Iga Świątek with victory in Madrid! An important opening of the tournament for the Pole

The Świątek-Snigur match lasted just over an hour. In the 1/16 finals, the Polish tennis player will definitely face her rival from the USA. It so happened that Świątek’s opponent will be the competition between Alycia Parks and Ann Li. Regardless of who ends up on the other side of the net, the Pole will undoubtedly be the favorite.

It is worth adding that the tournament in Madrid is the first opportunity for Świątek to play on the territory of her new coach. Spaniard Francisco Roig, head of the training staff, would certainly like his player to do well on clay.

In the 2026 season, the Pole did not manage to get past the quarterfinals. Who knows, maybe the 2024 tournament champion will break through in the capital of Spain. It is worth adding that last season Aryna Sabalenka was the best in Madrid.
