Iga Świątek was punished. The WTA decision is highly controversial

Iga Świątek

On Monday (October 20), the latest WTA ranking was published. In the case of Iga Świątek, there was a somewhat controversial deprivation of points from the Pole.

The Polish tennis player, after quite solid play in the 2025 season, remains behind the leader Aryna Sabalenka. Let us remind you that in the current campaign, Polka, among others, she won Wimbledon, advanced to the semifinals of the Australian Open and Roland Garros, and also reached the quarterfinals of the US Open.

Iga Świątek punished. The WTA decision is highly controversial

However, the latest WTA ranking, from Monday, October 20, may raise justified controversy. There is a lot of talk about the fatigue of players competing on WTA and ATP tours. However, both the women’s and men’s federations verify performances in events of particular prestige. This is the case, for example, of the WTA 500 tournament.

The top players should play in six such events per season. If they are missing, a round, ranking “zero” is entered on the side of the given tennis player.

On Monday, Świątek was punished with 65 points, and on the horizon she still has the prospect of losing points for her absence during the upcoming tournament in Tokyo. We reported earlier that the Polish tennis player had decided that the next tournament in which she would play, looking at the WTA competitions, would be the prestigious WTA Finals. This will be played in early November.

The Pole has already played 76 matches, 61 wins and 15 losses in the current season. In such a case, ranking penalties from the WTA seem quite absurd in relation to, among others, Poles or world leader Sabalenka.

Iga Świątek and all her championship titles

In her career so far, the Pole has won a total of 25 championship titles on courts almost all over the world.

Świątek won six Grand Slams, four times at Roland Garros (2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024), once at the US Open (2022) and Wimbledon (2025). To this should be added the prestigious triumph in the WTA Finals (2023).

In addition, wins in WTA 1000 tournaments in: Rome (2021, 2022, 2024), Doha (2022 and 2024), Indian Wells (2022 and 2024), Miami (2022), Beijing (2023), Madrid (2024) and the most recent one in Cincinnati (2025).

The list also includes WTA 500 competitions: Adelaide (2021), Stuttgart (2022 and 2023), San Diego (2022), Doha (2023) and Seoul (2025). Plus a Polish accent, WTA 250 in Warsaw (2023).

After the Olympic tournament in Paris (2024), a bronze medal of the Games should be added to this list. The first disc in the history of Polish Olympics taken from competition on tennis courts. Although, as the tennis player herself mentioned, after winning Wimbledon, if she could, she would exchange one of her Grand Slam wins – for Olympic gold.
