Iga Świątek was assessed bluntly. “He needs to make sure he really wants it.”
Iga Świątek will soon start the end of the 2026 season. The Pole still has a chance to enter the top eight in the world in the WTA Race ranking. But will he achieve this?
Participation in the WTA Finals at the end of the 2026 season is certainly one of the goals that both the tennis player and the Polish training staff can set for themselves. The most important thing, however, is that Iga Świątek makes regular progress under the guidance of coach Francisco Roig.
Thanks to this, the tennis player will be able to take on more and more serious challenges.
John McEnroe about Iga Świątek. The legend is beyond doubt
The Pole has had a rather unpleasant defeat in the US Open 2026. Świątek lost the match, which she opened with a score of 5-0. The winner of the 2022 event in New York lost the first game against Qinwen Zheng 5:7. The second set also went to the Chinese, which kicked the Pole out of the tournament.
Such a scenario, crazy from 5:0 to 5:7, cannot be explained by the legendary tennis player John McEnroe.
– She shouldn’t have lost that first set. I think she’s still stunned by losing this set. Whoever you are, it’s hard to get back up after losing a set like that. I guess that’s what you love and hate the most about this sport. You never know for sure, but at key moments, if you lose faith and confidence, whoever you are, your level drops. And it seems that in the end, at least in this mess, that’s what happened – noted the legendary tennis player.
For Eurosport, for which he is a long-time expert, McEnroe also drew attention to the Polish woman’s cooperation with coach Roig.
“He’s a respected coach and I think he wants her to play the way she played when she won all her Roland Garros titles. Constantly changing coaches is not best for anyone. That’s why I think she needs time and needs to make sure she really wants it (…) I don’t even know what she’s thinking right now, but in this particular case, it wasn’t the coaches that were the problem. Actually, I think they were on the right track, admitted the American.
Let us remind you that the Pole broke up with Wim Fissette during the 2026 season. The Belgian has been working with the Pole since autumn 2024, replacing Tomasz Wiktorowski. The greatest success of cooperation with the Belgian coach was the victory at Wimbledon (2025).
Iga Świątek and all her championship titles
In her career so far, the Pole has won a total of 26 championship titles on courts almost all over the world.
Świątek won six Grand Slam titles, four times at Roland Garros (2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024), once at the US Open (2022) and Wimbledon (2025). To this should be added the prestigious triumph in the WTA Finals (2023).
In addition, wins in WTA 1000 tournaments, respectively, in: Rome (2021, 2022, 2024), Doha (2022 and 2024), Indian Wells (2022 and 2024), Miami (2022), Beijing (2023), Madrid (2024), Cincinnati (2025) and the latest – in Toronto (2026).
The list also includes WTA 500 competitions: Adelaide (2021), Stuttgart (2022 and 2023), San Diego (2022), Doha (2023) and Seoul (2025).
Plus a Polish tournament accent, WTA 250 in Warsaw (2023).
As for Polish topics, it is impossible not to emphasize the bronze medal of the Olympic Games in the singles competition in Paris (2024). Świątek also won the Polish national team in the United Cup in Sydney (2026).
