Iga Świątek on the road to the Australian Open final? “The Polish woman is stabilized”

Iga Świątek

After the first week, the Australian Open only Iga Świątek remained in the game of Polish accents. Katarzyna Nowak assessed the events in Melbourne for “Wprost”.

Our interlocutor is the first Polish tennis player who appeared at the Olympic Games. A player from Łódź is a real precursor of professional tennis in Poland. Nowak is also the first Polish woman who advanced to the top 50th WTA ranking, which in the 1990s, in the crisis of Poland – and the lack of national financing – was a huge feat.

Katarzyna Nowak, after a career, became a valued commentator, analytical of tennis tournaments, on Polsat Sport antennas, for almost two decades. Regularly sharing your professional knowledge in other media until now. For “Wprost” she was a tennis player, she assessed the Australian Open, at the halfway point of competition on hard courts in Melbourne.

Australian Open: Magdalena Fręch and Maja Chwalińska did their job

Two rivals in this year’s Grand Slam attempt were defeated by Magdalena Fręch. Łódź was set up in AO 2025 with number 23. In Melbourne, a Polish woman in the first round beat Polina Kudermietowa (6: 4, 6: 4), and in her second match another Russian Russian Anna Blinka (0: 6, 6: 0, 6: 2) . She lost the fring only in the third Polish-Russian clash. Mirra Andrejew turned out to be better in the third round.

Andrejew, from Krasonars, is only 17 years old, and can already be called the Grand Slam semi -finalist. In 2024, the Russian woman reached the best four at the courts Roland Garros, where Iga Świątek is the undisputed queen. Andrejew is considered the greatest Russian tennis talent, moreover, it seems that it is quite right to deserve this term.

The fring lost 2: 6, 6: 1, 2: 6. A year earlier, Łódź reached the 4th round of the tournament in Australia. After all, the Polish woman should be satisfied with the performance.

– Magda Fręch for the first time defended such a number of points from the Grand Slam tournament. And she advised her very easy task, defending almost all points. Which really is not easy. Łódź has left a good impression – the first Polish tennis player on IO assessed.

Let us add that at the first round the participation in the AO 2025 ended with the qualifier Maja Chwalińska and experienced Magda Linette. While in the case of the first, the passage through three -stage qualifications can be considered a success, the latter certainly imagined a performance in Australia.

However, Linette has been very poor in Grand Slam tournaments for a long time. Paradoxically, this last spectacular result of a 32 -year -old player scored in … Australian Open. In 2023, the Polish woman reached the Grand Slam event semi -final, losing only to Aryna Sabalena.

Hubert Hurkacz with a poor opening of the 2025 season

In a similar mood as Linette can be the best Polish singling. Hubert Hurkacz, because we are talking about him, lost in AO 2025 already in the second round.

– We certainly expected more after Hubert Hurkacz’s performance. And this is not some form of criticism of a Polish tennis player. United Cup aroused a bit of appetite about how Hubert will present himself during the Australian Open. Especially this equal match with Taylor Fritz in the tournament finals, lost by a Pole minimally. On the other hand, players from better places in the ATP ranking did not reach the second week in Melbourne – Nowak admitted, adding an important issue: – However, the difference is that Danił Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas or Casper Ruud lost their lost matches after a hard fight. And Hubert, this match with Kecmanovic was a weak Pole. Although we should remember that Serb is a solid tennis player, who has additionally successful and a few big wins. Anyway, I had a lot of opportunities to comment on matches with his participation in the past – the tennis expert added rightly.

For supplementary, a tennis player from Wrocław lost in three sets Miomir Kecmanovic. Tennis player who came to Melbourne as player number 51 in the ATP ranking. The Pole was in the top ten in the world last year, and after such an early fall from AO 2025 he will fall out of the top twenty.

In the case of Hurkacz, you should additionally remember about health problems that excluded a Pole from the game shortly after Wimbledon 2024. An injury made on grassy courts in London caused that “Hubi” lost not only a trip to the Olympic Games in Paris, but actually the rest of the season. What’s worse, we are talking about knee problems, the Pole underwent surgery and although he returned to the court, you can still ask questions in the context of full fitness, after such a serious injury.

In addition, Hurkacz has a new coach. It was Nicolas Massu, a former Chilean tennis player, Olympic champion in single and doubles. Massu already as a trainer incl. He led Dominica Thiem to the triumph in the US Open (2020).

Hurkacz can count on the support of Ivan Lendel. The legend of tennis, with many Grand Slam successes on his account, already as a coach made Andy Murray won three wins in the great slam. Once in the US Open (2012) and twice in Wimbledon (2013 and 2016). Therefore, the Pole has a lot of experience in the staff, but for now he has to worry about the fact of falling out of the top twenty ATP.

– It seems to me that this is well illustrated by the current sports state of the Pole. Remember, however, that you must actually include new people in Hurkacz’s training staff. You have to give yourself time. A few months, maybe half a year. It is not always like new people bring great results, changes immediately. These are new experiences for Hubert and trainers. Number of analyzes, conversations, response to successes and failures. Is there an appropriate agreement in many areas between the player and the coach, or during the analysis, in general work. Remember that this cooperation outside the court is crucial. And we ultimately see only the end result, already during the performance in the match – the former representative of Poland and Olympic was analyzed.

Iga Świątek will play in the Australian Open final for the first time?

Changes in the training staff, though a little earlier than Hurkacz, were also made by the best Polish single. Wim Fissette became the new chief of staff. Świątek during the Australian Open intends to play for a full pot, being able to overtake the current leader from Minsk, the aforementioned Sabalenka.

The Polish woman is already in the 4th round in Melbourne. Last season, Świątek left the AO prematurely, for her abilities, falling out sensational in the third round. The best result of a Polish woman in Melbourne is the 2022 semi -final. Then Świątek lost to Danielle Collins. The American got loud again, although this time in the context of her conflict with Australian fans, and in addition she has already left the game.

– For me, Iga has not yet had demanding opponents in this year’s Australian Open. It is different in the recent United Cup. Very nice Świątek played with Rybakina, a good match with the British, and an interesting meeting with Coco Gauff. Looking at Iga, I don’t see something new that she would use on the court. You can see freshness, very high dynamics. Everything is so intact. Focus, focused, dynamic. The Polish woman is stabilized, there is no moment of uncertainty in her performances – she appreciated the game of Świątek, the former commentator, among others Polsat Sport.

Can a Polish tennis player play in the final in Melbourne? Until now, that the Polish woman in the first round defeated Kaaterina Sinakova (6: 3, 6: 4), and in the second match at AO 2025 did not give Rebbece Sramkova a chance (6: 0, 6: 2). Instead, the match with Emma Raducanie Świątek ended a spectacular 6: 1, 6: 0.

– Will Iga play in the final? Of course, just as a few other favorites can do: Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff or Jelena Rybakina. After all, the Polish woman is number 2 in the ranking. So far, Świątek is playing in Australian Open – the best Polish tennis player of the 80s and the first half of the 90th century said.

In the fourth round, the Polish tennis player will play with Eva Lys, a German qualifier. The Polish-German duel is scheduled for Monday (i.e. January 20) of Polish time, around 8:30.
