Iga Świątek never gives up! The Pole kept the national team afloat
Iga Świątek defeated Jasmine Paolini in three sets in the Billie Jean King Cup semi-final. The Pole thus maintained the team’s chances for the final of the tournament in Malaga.
The semi-final of the Billie Jean King Cup in Malaga between the Poles and the Italians started with the match between Magda Linette and Lucia Bronzetti. The Poznań player, although seven years older than her rival and more experienced on courts all over the world, lost in two sets.
Linette tried to outplay the debutant in the BJKC event, but ultimately, after a great series in the second set (from 1:4 to 5:4 for the Pole), she failed to score a point for the national team to open the historic semi-final in the history of our team.
Iga Świątek won against Jasmine Paolini. The great battle in Malaga
Fortunately, it turned out not for the first time that Iga Świątek can win matches in which it seems that the arguments are already on the opponent’s side. The team leader managed to win in three sets against Jasmine Paolini. After a great battle, there is no denying it, full of twists and amazing exchanges.
The meeting lasted two hours and 36 minutes. The Italian with Polish roots (mother from Poland) played the best match of her career against Świątek. So far, the most she has been able to win is three games in a set. And not only did they win game number 1, 6:3, but also the next two, 4:6 and 4:6, full of drama.
Most importantly, the doubles competition will decide who advances to the semi-finals. Just like it happened in the quarterfinals against the Czechs. The hands themselves applaud.
Historic success of the Polish national team in the Billie Jean King Cup!
Thanks to Saturday’s victory over the Czechs, the Polish tennis team made history by advancing to the semi-finals. Poland made its debut in the competition in the era of the so-called amateur tennis, exactly in 1966, reaching the second round. Until 2024, the Polish women’s best result was the quarterfinal in 1992 (the team leader was Katarzyna Nowak at that time) and the 2015 edition, with the participation of Agnieszka Radwańska.
It is also worth adding that the current name, i.e. Billie Jean King Cup, has been in operation since 2020. Previously, the competition, modeled on the men’s Davis Cup, was called the Federation Cup and Fed Cup. The result achieved in the 2024 finals in Malaga is therefore a reason for great satisfaction for the Polish women.
The defending champions of 2023 are the Canadians, who defeated the Italians 2-0 in the title match. Already after the results of the quarterfinals (Canada was eliminated by Great Britain), it is known that in this context there will be a change and BJKC will have new champions.
