Iga Świątek joined Serena Williams! The Polish woman’s incredible success
Iga Świątek advanced to the second round of the US Open 2026. The Pole easily defeated Wang Xiyu in two sets. The match between the Polish woman and the Chinese woman did not have much history.
The match result, i.e. the final 6:2, 6:3, reflects well the events on the court. The Chinese woman tried to stand up to the winner of the 2022 US Open, but the risk is not worth it in tennis if you don’t have a good day. And in the case of Wang Xiyu, the final balance of profits and losses was such that the player made twice as many errors as finishing strokes, i.e. the so-called winners. You can’t win a match with Iga Świątek like this.
Polish like Serena Williams! An amazing story in world tennis
The best Polish tennis player came to New York in quite a good mood. This is hardly surprising, after all, the Pole has had two successful performances in WTA 1000 tournaments in recent weeks – in Toronto and Cincinnati. Moreover, she turned out to be the best on Canadian courts, thus winning her first tournament in the 2026 season.
What can Świątek achieve in New York? This cannot be clearly assessed yet, but it can certainly be quite a big result, considering the Polish woman’s performance on hard surfaces.
The win against Xiyu allowed Świątek to equalize Serena Williams. The American legend, one of the best players in the history of tennis, can boast of a similar achievement to the Pole – taking into account victories (in a row) in the first rounds of Grand Slam tournaments. Świątek’s series has been going on since the 2019 US Open and amounts to another 28 wins.
Serena Williams has 31 of them, which seems to be the most achievable result for Świątek in the next months of her career.
The Pole’s next rival in New York will be Argentine Nadia Podoroska.
Iga Świątek and all her championship titles
In her career so far, the Pole has won a total of 26 championship titles on courts almost all over the world.
Świątek won six Grand Slam titles, four times at Roland Garros (2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024), once at the US Open (2022) and Wimbledon (2025). To this should be added the prestigious triumph in the WTA Finals (2023).
In addition, wins in WTA 1000 tournaments, respectively, in: Rome (2021, 2022, 2024), Doha (2022 and 2024), Indian Wells (2022 and 2024), Miami (2022), Beijing (2023), Madrid (2024), Cincinnati (2025) and the latest – in Toronto (2026).
The list also includes WTA 500 competitions: Adelaide (2021), Stuttgart (2022 and 2023), San Diego (2022), Doha (2023) and Seoul (2025).
Plus a Polish tournament accent, WTA 250 in Warsaw (2023).
As for Polish topics, it is impossible not to emphasize the bronze medal of the Olympic Games in the singles competition in Paris (2024). Świątek also won the Polish national team in the United Cup in Sydney (2026).
