Iga Świątek is training with a new coach! Here is a surprising turn regarding the Polish woman
It seemed that Michael Joyce would be Iga Świątek’s new coach. It turns out, however, that Rafael Nadal himself was to enter into the game regarding the Polish woman’s future.
Will Iga Świątek be trained by her idol? None of these things, it’s more a matter of appropriate advice on who the Polish tennis player can rely on. Rafael Nadal was to appoint the former WTA ranking leader as his former staff member. Who exactly are we talking about? This is Francisco Roig, a well-known figure in the tennis world.
Iga Świątek is training with a new coach! Rafael Nadal suggested the Pole’s choice?
Surprising information about the trip of the best Polish tennis player to Majorca, more specifically to the Rafael Nadal Academy, was the first to be reported by journalists of “Przegląd Sportowy” and Onet. The case was also confirmed thanks to Sport.pl.
It was there that the so-called Świątek introductory training under the supervision of the above-mentioned Roig. So can we now talk and write about the almost certain choice of the Polish tennis player? Certainty will appear after an appropriate announcement from the interested party itself. Not so long ago it seemed that the choice would be completely different – it would fall on the American Michael Joyce.
Now we are talking about an almost 58-year-old Spaniard who was on Nadal’s staff for 17 years. Although he was not number 1 among the staff members.
From 2022, Roig went on his own, separating from the King of Paris.
“Roig has already been the head coach of well-known players, but so far the cooperation has not been very long. For less than a year (until October 2024) he was the coach of the Italian Matteo Berrettini, and from August 2025 to January this year of the British Emma Raducanu, who is famous for frequent changes of coaches. Recently, the experienced Spaniard accompanied the 22-year-old Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard during tournaments (59th ATP)” – we read in the text by Agnieszka Niedziałek and Dariusz Wołowski from Sport.pl.
The cooperation with the latter, a French player, was widely reported, among others, by: on the occasion of the recent tournament in Indian Wells.
If it were indeed Roig, it is not a character that would be obvious – although the Spanish direction is probably an additional emphasis on playing on clay courts. Where for a long time Świątek felt the best.
Final decisions regarding the position of coach after the dismissed Wim Fissette will probably be made soon.
