Iga Świątek is number 1 in the world again! The Pole did it in Paris
Great news came straight from the French capital. Iga Świątek thanks to winning the first round of the tournament on the tennis courts. Roland Garros – made history.
Let us remind you that the Pole managed to overcome her first obstacle in Paris without any problems. Iga Świątek defeated a rising talent – teenage Australian Emerson Jones – in two sets (6:1, 6:2).

As it turns out, thanks to winning in Paris, Świątek became the first competitor in the so-called Open Era, which reached the second rounds of Grand Slam tournaments – winning another 25 matches in a row. Interestingly, previously only men had performed this feat – there were three of them. We are talking about legendary names, i.e. Jim Courier (in the 1990s), Roger Federer (2010) and Novak Djokovic (2010).
This additionally shows the scale of the Polish woman’s achievement.
It is also worth adding that the mentioned Open Era has been counted in tennis since 1968. It was then that his professional career began. Among the women, only Świątek managed to complete such an impressive series – during one decade – starting from 2020. Let us add that the counter will continue to tick and it seems that it will not stop too quickly when it comes to the Polish woman’s capabilities in the context of subsequent Grand Slam challenges.
Świątek’s next rival during RG 2026 will be the Czech Sara Bejlek. We are talking about a player ranked 35th in the WTA ranking, so it will certainly not be an easy challenge for the Pole.
The match Świątek – Bejlek is scheduled for Wednesday (i.e. May 27), starting at 12:00.
RG 2026 matches are shown on Eurosport, on a total of four channels of the station. Additionally, the online competition is available via the HBO Max platform. The competition in the main tournament is scheduled from May 24 to June 7.

In her career so far, the Pole has won a total of 25 championship titles on courts almost all over the world.
Świątek won six Grand Slam titles, four times at Roland Garros (2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024), once at the US Open (2022) and Wimbledon (2025). To this should be added the prestigious triumph in the WTA Finals (2023).
In addition, wins in WTA 1000 tournaments in: Rome (2021, 2022, 2024), Doha (2022 and 2024), Indian Wells (2022 and 2024), Miami (2022), Beijing (2023), Madrid (2024) and Cincinnati (2025).
The list also includes WTA 500 competitions: Adelaide (2021), Stuttgart (2022 and 2023), San Diego (2022), Doha (2023) and Seoul (2025).
Plus a Polish tournament accent, WTA 250 in Warsaw (2023).
As for Polish topics, it is impossible not to emphasize the bronze medal of the Olympic Games in the singles competition in Paris (2024). Świątek also won the Polish national team in the United Cup in Sydney (2026).
