Iga Świątek is back for good! The Pole gave the Russian a harsh tennis lesson

Iga Świątek

Iga Świątek easily defeated Russian Daria Kasatkina in two sets in the WTA Finals match. In Riyadh, the Pole needed less than an hour of play to succeed.

It must be admitted that much more interesting things happened… before the match than during the match number 3 played by Iga Świątek. On Wednesday, the Pole learned about the change of her rival. It was supposed to be Jessica Pegula, but due to a knee injury, the American was replaced by a “reserve”, Russian Daria Kasatkina.

WTA Finals: Iga Świątek defeated Daria Kasatkina in Riyadh!

The Pole went to Thursday’s match with one simple attitude – to do her job. From the very beginning it was clear that Świątek had no intention of breaking out of his predetermined rhythm. After eight minutes of play it was 2-0 for the number 2 in the tournament, with the Russian’s service being broken. After a quarter of an hour it was 4-0. To illustrate what the meeting looked like, it is worth looking at individual points. In the first four games of the match, the Pole lost only five out of 22 balls played.

After 26 minutes it was 6:1. Kasatkina managed to avoid losing to zero, but that was actually… the only success of the Russian playing with the “number nine” in her first and last match in Riyadh. The Pole ended the first game with an impressive service ace.

There were no major emotions in the second and last part of the match. After 16 minutes it was 4-0, Kasatkina couldn’t believe the pace of the match, rather counting down to the end. A rival from Poland, on the contrary. Świątek achieved her goal and did what she could in the third match during the tournament in Riyadh. The Russian failed to win the game in the second set and ended up with the so-called bagel, i.e. a 6-0 and 2-0 win in the entire match.

What now? Waiting for the result of the match between Coco Gauff and Barbora Krejcikova. If the American defeats the Czech, the Pole will advance to the semi-finals of the event. Waiting there for Świątek is… the leader of the WTA ranking, Aryna Sabalenka. If Krejcikova wins, the Polish player will say goodbye to the tournament, and this year’s Wimbledon winner will advance to the next games.

The Gauff-Krejcikova match starts at 4:00 p.m. WTA Finals matches can be watched on Canal+ sports channels and via Canal+ online.
