Iga Świątek in a high-stakes game. Will a Ukrainian star stop a Polish woman?

Iga Świątek reached the tournament semi-final only once in the 2026 season – not counting the appearance in Toronto. It took place in Rome, where during a WTA 1000 event, the Pole had to accept the superiority of Elina Svitolina. The Ukrainian is having a very solid season, although there is no denying that the match was very even. In Rome, Svitolina won in three sets 6:4, 2:6, 6:2.

This season, both tennis players also played in Indian Wells (WTA 1000). And here again Svitolina was on top, this time at the quarterfinal stage of the event. The Ukrainian won again after a three-set fight 6:2, 4:6, 6:4.

Therefore, we can expect a tough fight between the tennis player number 8 and 9 in the WTA ranking. Świątek is one step higher, but this does not mean that the Pole can be considered a sure favorite for success. In the second semi-final of the event in Canada, Kazakh Jelena Rybakina and American Coco Gauff will face each other.

Świątek and Switolina will be the first to take to the court in the context of the tournament semi-finals. The match starts in Toronto at 1:00, on the night from Wednesday to Thursday, Polish time. The Pole seems to be ready for such a big challenge as the competition with Svitolina. Paradoxically, Świątek was strongly strengthened by the victory over… another representative of Ukraine, Marta Kostiuk, at the stage of the fourth round.
