Iga Świątek experienced something like that for the first time. “I doubt, to be honest”

Iga Świątek

The Wednesday quarter -final of the WTA 1000 in Madrid was unusual between Iga Świątek and Madison Keys. The Polish woman shared her impressions from the court.

The quarter -final clash in Madrid was a replay of the Australian Open 2025 semi -final. At that time, the American won, later reaching for her first Grand Slam title in her career. This time, on the brick court, Iga Świątek was the top. Madison Keys, however, started with a perfect set. The American won 6: 0 with a Polish woman, exactly in 24 minutes of the game. It was a real knockout!

WTA 1000 Madrid: Iga Świątek with 0: 6 failure and the match against Madison Keys

Ultimately, after such a strong impact on the part of the American, Świątek managed to collect herself. First winning 6: 3 the second batch (it already had a 5: 1 lead), and then 6: 2 in the most important, decisive setting. Keys went out, the longer this meeting lasted. Another thing is that the Polish woman eliminated her mistakes, began to play more consistently, and also mastered the nerves. And this mix allowed Świątek to get out of oppression and then win the match.

After the meeting, Joanna Sakowicz-Kostecka questioned the winner in front of the Canal+ Sport camera, about her emotions related to this first, lost party to zero.

– To be honest, I don’t know if I turned this match to the end. I was aware that it would be difficult to keep Madison this level of playing the whole match. I am glad that I was concentrated. Despite the fact that the result was 0: 6, I didn’t feel that I was playing so badly. I certainly played for long balls, but I corrected it. And ultimately I am glad that it was actually reversed – admitted the vice -leader of the WTA ranking.

Did Świątek have the opportunity to win the match in which she lost the 0: 6 set?

– I doubt, to be honest (…) The truth is also that I know it from experience, when the rivals lost such sets. The girl on the other side tries everything, after losing 0: 6 she has less to lose. Then one leg is out of the tournament. Everyone watched how I won that it was so simple. But as you can see, this is not the case. The match can turn around, you have to be ready on the court all the time – the Polish woman said.

It is worth adding that, as Opta ACE informed on the X platform, Polka 0: 6 has not lost since … June 2021. Then Daria Kasatkina won in this size with a Polish tennis player. The Russian did it in the tournament in Eastbourne on the grassy.

What’s more, the Polish woman is only the second player in the last 40 years (!) Who managed to win the match in which she lost 0: 6 with a rival from the top “five” of the WTA ranking. Earlier this was done by Steffi Graf in 1992 at Roland Garros’ courts, when Spanish Arantx Sanchez Vicario was the opponent.
