Iga Świątek ends the year with a significant deficit. Just look
Iga Świątek remained in the second position in the WTA ranking in the latest Christmas rankings. The distance to the leader Aryna Sabalenka is over 1,000 points.
Let us remind you that the Pole officially became the leader of the WTA ranking for the first time in April 2022. Since then, Iga Świątek has only been overtaken twice at the top of the tennis world. In both cases, Aryna Sabalenka became the leader.
Iga Świątek is number 2 in the WTA Christmas rankings
History tends to repeat itself, which is why the girl from Minsk, the Polish champion’s biggest rival, took the leader’s seat for good. It is worth adding that the last few months were particularly demanding for Świątek, mainly due to the doping mishap, and the Pole, after a failed US Open, appeared on the court only at the end of the year – during the WTA Finals in Riyadh.
Only after some time did it become clear what was the reason for Świątek’s long absence. The lack of ranking points had an impact on the WTA rankings. At the end of the year, Sabalenka is over 1,000 points ahead of the Pole. The deficit is large, but in the case of the Australian Open 2025, Świątek will have an opportunity to “catch up”. Sabalenka, however, is the defending Grand Slam champion in Melbourne, so you will certainly have to be careful when pursuing the Belarusian.
