Iga Świątek chose a new path. This is the change that the Pole needed

The match between Iga Świątek and Jessica Pegula for the final of the tournament in Cincinnati was a really interesting spectacle. The Pole ultimately lost, but once again she showed something that would not have been so obvious a few months ago.

Świątek did not give up, pressing her opponent almost all the time. Head down? NO. Nerves and emotions? Yes.

There is hope before the US Open. Iga Świątek in a completely different version!

The Pole returned to the court after two painful defeats. One could even wonder aloud about the direction in which the career of the former number 1 in the WTA ranking was heading. Ultimately, however, after losing Grand Slam challenges in Paris (fourth round) and Wimbledon (third round), Świątek showed a completely new face.

Apart from the fact of winning – the first in the season – in the entire tournament (WTA 1000 in Toronto), the Polish tennis player began to refer to the old, great times. Much more respect for each point, fewer unforced errors. Risk? Yes, but not at any cost. The Pole also stopped rushing to shorten the exchanges, and on the contrary, she was often able to skillfully extend them. Additionally, Świątek got out of big trouble, either in the case of defended break points or, more broadly, by winning matches that were not going well at all (sets lost).

Defeat against Pegula in the semifinals in Cincinnati? It seems that the American is playing really solid tennis, not coincidentally having already 45 victories in the 2026 season alone. No other tennis player on the WTA tour can boast of such a number.

Additionally, the Pole made a lot of mistakes, often resulting from difficult weather conditions. We are talking about a strongly blowing wind, to which Pegula was better adapted. Świątek talked about it openly after the match against the American.

Additionally, it was much easier for the Pole to accept her own emotions. During the fight with Pegula, there were many moments when Świątek was angry with herself, e.g. about her poor footwork. However, she communicated with people from her staff on an ongoing basis. While listening to many comments, which she translated into her behavior and approach. This was visible in the later parts of the match.

For example, trying to accept that she will not be able to show her best tennis on the court at every moment.

It seems that the change of coach did a lot of good. Francisco Roig has a positive, healthy aura around him. At least by observing how the Spaniard reacts from the side, observing the achievements of his protégé. And the decisive test of these changes for Świątek will be the last Grand Slam in the 2026 season.

The US Open – the main bracket of the tournament – will be played from August 30 to September 13. However, on August 24-26, a demonstration duet competition is planned, in which the Pole will also take part.

In her career so far, the Pole has won a total of 26 championship titles on courts almost all over the world.

Świątek won six Grand Slam titles, four times at Roland Garros (2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024), once at the US Open (2022) and Wimbledon (2025). To this should be added the prestigious triumph in the WTA Finals (2023).

In addition, wins in WTA 1000 tournaments in: Rome (2021, 2022, 2024), Doha (2022 and 2024), Indian Wells (2022 and 2024), Miami (2022), Beijing (2023), Madrid (2024), Cincinnati (2025) and the most recent one – in Toronto (2026).

The list also includes WTA 500 competitions: Adelaide (2021), Stuttgart (2022 and 2023), San Diego (2022), Doha (2023) and Seoul (2025).

Plus a Polish tournament accent, WTA 250 in Warsaw (2023).

As for Polish topics, it is impossible not to emphasize the bronze medal of the Olympic Games in the singles competition in Paris (2024). Świątek also won the Polish national team in the United Cup in Sydney (2026).
