Iga Świątek brutally took it from the Russian. Was this the Polish woman’s moment?
Iga Świątek defeated Diana Sznajder in just over an hour in the quarterfinals of the WTA 1000 tournament in Toronto. It was a real show of the Polish woman’s strength in a high-stakes game.
The start time of Tuesday’s match (i.e. August 11) was not very pleasant for Polish tennis fans. Iga Świątek and Diana Sznajder started playing at 1:00 am. However, as it turned out, the favorite made sure that… her compatriots could get enough sleep. The result 6:2 and 6:1 – reflects the events on the court in Toronto very well.
In fact, from the first game it became clear who that day was the more accurate, more effective and simply better sports player. Sznajder could only thank Świątek for the tennis lesson.

Even before the quarterfinal clash began, we recalled in WPROST the Russian’s last opportunity to contact the Polish tennis player. It took place in the semi-finals of Roland Garros 2026. Sznajder lost to Maja Chwalińska. Świątek was able to get the idea of effective competition out of the Russian’s head much faster.
In Toronto, the conditions on the court were quite difficult due to the wind. Świątek, however, acclimatized to the realities faster, and the more delicate Sznajder not only had a fast-paced opponent on the other side of the net, but also mother nature did not favor her to play more effectively.
Świątek, thanks to the victory over Sznajder, advanced to the semi-finals of the WTA 1000 event, once again breaking her career records. Looking only at the current season, the last time the Pole was in the top four was during the tournament in Rome.
It is worth recalling that the Pole has been waiting for the tournament victory since last year. Interestingly, at that time it was also a tournament on hard courts, but in Cincinnati. Who knows, maybe this time it will be time for success in Canada.
What is most important, however, is that the Polish team’s performance is very optimistic. Świątek has clearly revived after recent failures on the courts of Roland Garros (defeat in the fourth round) and Wimbledon (elimination in the third round).
The Polish tennis player’s rival in the semi-finals will be Elina Switolina or Ekaterina Aleksandrowa.

Świątek won six Grand Slam titles, four times at Roland Garros (2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024), once at the US Open (2022) and Wimbledon (2025). To this should be added the prestigious triumph in the WTA Finals (2023).
In addition, wins in WTA 1000 tournaments in: Rome (2021, 2022, 2024), Doha (2022 and 2024), Indian Wells (2022 and 2024), Miami (2022), Beijing (2023), Madrid (2024) and Cincinnati (2025).
The list also includes WTA 500 competitions: Adelaide (2021), Stuttgart (2022 and 2023), San Diego (2022), Doha (2023) and Seoul (2025).
Plus a Polish tournament accent, WTA 250 in Warsaw (2023).
As for Polish topics, it is impossible not to emphasize the bronze medal of the Olympic Games in the singles competition in Paris (2024). Świątek also won the Polish national team in the United Cup in Sydney (2026).
