Iconic river is once again suitable for swimming. It took 100 years
Good news is coming from France, and this time it’s not related to the Olympics at all. It’s about the Seine River and the fact that its water is once again suitable for bathing. We’ve been waiting for this for years.
The Seine is one of the most recognizable natural attractions in France. Tourists enjoy walking along it, for example in Paris. It has its mouth in the English Channel, and its entire length is 774.8 km. We have long forgotten the times when bathing in this river was allowed. It turns out that now it will be possible to remember. There are reasons to be happy.
The Seine is suitable for bathing
The process of cleaning the Seine has been widely reported for years. We reported on it last year, among others. The Paris authorities were trying to unblock the famous attraction so that it would return to us in full after 100 years. Now, finally, there has been a breakthrough and it was announced by French President Emmanuel Macron.
It is a success, because the river is suitable for bathing for the first time in a hundred years. This fact was commented on during the women’s triathlon competition, which took place on the Seine. It turns out that on Wednesday, July 31, athletes competing in the Olympic triathlon swam 1,500 meters in the Seine.
A ban on bathing in the river was introduced in 1923 due to threats to navigation and water pollution. Jacques Chirac, as mayor of Paris, promised to reinstate bathing in the 1980s and 1990s, but this was not achieved at the time.
The work has paid off. The Seine is clean
Restoring the Seine to a usable state was very laborious and expensive. It is known that it cost 1.4 billion euros, half of which came from state funds. Thanks to the joint efforts of the state, Paris and the Val-de-Marne department, what seemed impossible for a hundred years was achieved.
The president assured that residents will now be able to bathe in the Seine as much as they want. Entering the water is therefore to be legal and safe. It is worth remembering that currently you can encounter numerous difficulties, because the Olympic Games in Paris are taking place until August 11. After all, the situation on the spot should calm down a bit. The official opening of the bathing areas in the Seine is to take place already in 2025
