Huge scandal in Poland’s Olympic team: “We are treated like garbage”
Dawid Tomala, Olympic champion from the Tokyo Games, revealed the behind-the-scenes changes in the Polish team during the competition in Paris. Unfortunately, they sound downright scandalous.
On Monday (5th August), Radosław Piesiewicz, the president of the Polish Olympic Committee, announced that there would be a change in the Polish team. Katarzyna Zdziebło was to leave Paris and Agnieszka Ellward was to come in to replace the race walker. The aforementioned change took place. Zdziebło did not do too well in the 20 km competition during her start. The Polish athlete came in 30th.
Paris 2024: Dawid Tomala reveals the inside story of the scandal in the Polish national team
The two-time 2022 world vice-champion has had health problems recently, so it was hard to expect a sensational result. The background of the aforementioned change, or more precisely its announcement, was revealed by another of the reserve players on the list of the Olympic team for the 2024 Olympics, Dawid Tomala. The Olympic champion from the last games revealed that both representatives were supposed to have learned about the decision to change from… Internet sources.
– Kasia found out that she was coming back from social media. Then she received a return ticket to Poland from the walking coordinator coach who was in Poland. It was 6 p.m. and she was supposed to leave the village at 4 a.m. the next day (…) Everyone thought it was “fake news”. In the Olympic Village they laughed about it, and later it turned out to be true. I don’t understand how anyone can behave like this towards us. We are treated like garbage – admitted the Olympic champion from the Tokyo Games (2021).
The Polish Olympic team wins four medals in Paris
So far, Poland has four Olympic medals from the competition in the capital of France. The first to win the Olympic vice-championship was Klaudia Zwolińska, a whitewater kayaker. The bronze medal was then added by the Polish epee fencers, who snatched the team success by winning the match for 3rd place against the Chinese after a great fight.
The men responded to the women’s successes. The bronze medal was won by rowers, the Polish doubles team consisting of Dominik Czaja, Fabian Barański, Mirosław Ziętarski and Mateusz Biskup. On Friday, August 2, Iga Świątek added a bronze medal. She was the first in the history of the Polish Olympic movement to win an Olympic medal in tennis.
Poland also has a “virtual” medal, not yet included in the official record, but already certain – looking at the competition. We are talking about the success of boxer Julia Szeremeta. The Polish athlete found herself in the best four in the 57 kg category. And since there are no fights for bronze in boxing, the Polish competitor can already enjoy a place on the podium at the 2024 Olympics.
It is worth recalling that at the last summer games (Tokyo 2021), Poland won a total of 14 Olympic medals. This achievement consisted of: four gold, five silver and five bronze.
