On January 1 this year, the act regarding the so-called widow’s pension. It is a combination of a survivor’s pension with another benefit, e.g. old-age pension or disability pension.

Previously, a widowed person had to decide whether they received their own pension or survivor’s pension after their deceased spouse (it amounted to a maximum of 85% of the deceased’s benefit). As a result of the changes, you can choose to pay 100%. survivor’s pension and 15 percent own benefit, or 100 percent own benefit and 15 percent survivor’s pension. In 2027, the amount of the second benefit paid as part of the widow’s pension will be increased to 25%.

The payment of a widow’s pension depends on whether the widower or widow meets all of the following conditions:

• is entitled to at least two different pension benefits, including a survivor’s pension after the deceased spouse,

• is at the standard retirement age (i.e. a widow is over 60 years old and a widower is over 65 years old),

• remained or remained in the marital community until the death of the spouse,

• has an established right to a survivor’s pension after the deceased spouse at the earliest age of 55 (widow) or 60 (widower),

• he is not currently married.

As mentioned, the act entered into force on January 1 and the recruitment of applications began from that date. As we informed, on the first day the Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) was inundated with applications for benefits. What does the situation look like after a week? According to ZUS, by January 7, over 33.7 thousand received widow’s pension applications. Most of them were submitted to ZSU branches (24.6 thousand). In turn, 4.6 thousand were sent via PUE ZUS/eZUS. documents. You can also apply for a widow’s pension at the Agricultural Social Insurance Fund and pension institutions of uniformed services.

Payment of the benefit will start in July this year.
