Huge controversy surrounding Iga Świątek. “This is going down to gutter level.”
A lot has happened in recent weeks regarding Iga Świątek. The Pole has not appeared on the court since the US Open, and there was also a change in the position of head coach.
Iga Świątek, regardless of her place in the WTA ranking, is number 1 in Polish sport. Only Robert Lewandowski can compare with the tennis player in terms of popularity and fan involvement. It is therefore not surprising that all changes concerning Polish women during the sports season are divided into various factors in the media.
Lech Sidor on the controversy surrounding the role of Daria Abramowicz
In parallel with the breakup with Tomasz Wiktorowski – the Pole was succeeded by the Belgian Wim Fissette – several strong opinions appeared against Daria Abramowicz. A member of Iga Świątek’s staff, who takes care of her mental sphere, is a very important element of the everyday sports puzzle of the Polish tennis player.
– This is only my subjective assessment. This has nothing to do with the larger picture. However, a few times you could get the impression that Wiktorowski was a bit irritated by the whole situation. Well, because of course the media is nosy and the media is everywhere. Pictures of how Daria Abramowicz carries a bag behind Iga, how she enters training, how she holds a racket in her hand, how she passes balls, how she collects them. Well… Sometimes I read some articles that were a bit sensational and amused me. I read them a bit like sensational prose about what was happening in that camp. But unfortunately this is also due to the lack of communication. When journalists have no basis for writing articles, they start looking for sensations anywhere and anyhow. And this comes down to a bit of a gutter level. And it has nothing to do with reality – admitted Sidor in “Eurosport Podcast”.
As for the achievements of the Belgian trainer, he certainly commands a lot of respect. The Belgian is 44 years old and Świątek will be the eleventh player in his career whom he will lead as head coach. Tennis fans can rightly link the new Polish coach with the past successes of the Belgian women. Specifically, we are talking about one of the two greats, namely Kim Clijsters. Under Fissette’s supervision, the Belgian achieved, among others, two Grand Slam titles each, winning the US Open and the Australian Open.
The list of players led by the Belgian also includes: Sabine Lisicki, Simona Halep, Johanna Konta, Angelique Kerber, Qinwen Zheng and Naomi Osaka. Names practically from the very top of the WTA.
Returning to the topic of Abramowicz, let’s once again give the floor to the Eurosport commentator.
– I know two very good psychologists. You could say that they laid the foundations for Olympic psychology, for our association. I won’t mention names because they may not want me to. But the world of sports psychology is a little surprised that this Daria is with her everywhere. That she works 24/7, that the line between professionalism and private life is a bit blurred. These boundaries have been blurred and this is a bit too much.
Iga Świątek and all her championship titles
In her career so far, the Pole has won a total of 22 championship titles on courts almost all over the world.
Świątek won five Grand Slam titles, four times at Roland Garros (2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024) and once at the US Open (2022). To this should be added the prestigious triumph in the WTA Finals (2023).
In addition, wins in WTA 1000 tournaments in: Rome (2021, 2022, 2024), Doha (2022 and 2024), Indian Wells (2022 and 2024), Miami (2022), Beijing (2023) and Madrid (2024) ). The list also includes WTA 500 competitions: Adelaide (2021), Stuttgart (2022 and 2023), San Diego (2022) and the aforementioned Doha (2023). Plus a Polish accent, WTA 250 in Warsaw (2023).
After the Olympic tournament in Paris (2024), a bronze medal of the Games should be added to this list. The first disc in the history of Polish Olympics taken from competition on tennis courts.
