Hubert Hurkacz with a key break! The Pole made the national team successful

The Polish national team is on its way to the semi-finals of the event held in Australia. Hubert Hurkacz won in two sets, 7:6 (3) and 7:5. Iga Świątek will join the game after the Wrocław tennis player. The Pole’s rival will be Katie Boulter. If victorious, Poland will secure a place in the top four of United Cup 2025.

Before the match, it was known that the favorite of the fight would be the player from Wrocław. Hurkacz returns to the world courts after a serious knee injury suffered during last year’s Wimbledon. For this reason, the Pole did not perform, among others, in the Olympic tournament in Paris.

However, during the ongoing United Cup, Hurkacz could not break through. Both against Norway and the Czech Republic, the best Polish singles player (ATP 16) lost his matches. The breakthrough came in the third fight. Hurkacz won in two sets in the quarterfinals against Great Britain. Billy Harris, who was outside the top 100 of the rankings, tried his best, but in key moments it was Hurkacz who showed sportsmanship, scoring valuable points on his opponent’s serve.

The first set ended only in a tie-break. Both tennis players guarded their service games. Ultimately, however, the Wrocław player managed to move up a gear, thanks to which he won the key game 7:3. Second set? Here there was one break, in the eleventh game of the match. Hurkacz got 6:5 and didn’t let the Briton even think about breaking back. The Pole won to zero on his serve, thanks to which he added a game for 7:5 and 2:0 in the entire match.

Two more stages of the Poland-Great Britain competition are planned for Thursday. The above-mentioned match between Świątek and Boulter, who is doing great in the 2024 season, and the mixed. In the case of the last competition, it will take place even if the score is 2:0 for Poland, which means a certain victory and advancement to the semi-finals of the United Cup 2025.

It is worth recalling that in the case of the history of the United Cup, Polish tennis is doing quite well. Two finals have been played so far, and one of them – last year’s (2023/24) – featured the Polish national team. Ultimately, Świątek and Hurkacz lost to the German team, represented by Angelika Kerber (lost to Świątek), Alex Zwieriew (won to Hurkacz) and doubles Laura Siegemund / Alexander Zwieriew (defeated by Świątek/Hurkacz duo). In the premiere edition, the USA crushed Italy 4-0 in the final.

United Cup 2025. When does the Polish national team play?

The Polish team finished the group games with complete victories. The national team won 2-1 in both cases, first against Norway and then against the Czech Republic. Interestingly, Iga Świątek had all the victories. The team leader won both singles and mixed doubles, first in a duo with Jan Zieliński (vs Norway), and then with Hubert Hurkacz (vs Czech Republic).
