Hubert Hurkacz broken. The Pole was one step away from the deprivation of a dream of legend

Hubert Hurkacz

It was a great finale, but without a happy ending for Hubert Hurkacz. The Pole lost after a three -hour battle in ATP 250 in Geneva with Novak Djokovic.

Last weeks for the best Polish tennis player are really successful. The first signals about the rise of Hubert Hurkaca could be observed during the ATP 1000 tournament in Rome. In the capital of Italy, a Wrocław resident saved a prey, which he reached a year ago, reaching the 1/4 final of the prestigious struggle.

What’s funny, the Pole, like in the 2024 edition, at the same stage … lost exactly to the same opponent. The American Tommy Paul turned out to be better than “Hubi” for the second time.

ATP 250 Geneva: Hubert Hurkacz in a clash with a great tennis legend

A Pole from the heart of Italy moved to Switzerland, where he planned the last tournament in front of the Grand Slam Roland Garros 2025. Hurkacz played in the ATP 250 tournament in Geneva, which in time turned out to be quite well -planned.

The Wrocław residents of Wroclaw opened his way to the finals with a great quarter -final victory over TayLor Fritz. The American, currently number 4 of the ATP ranking, lost to the Pole – which is why Hurkacz officially threw out “one” from the tournament. As it turned out, the “two” was already waiting in the final. However, the challenge seemed even more difficult. Hurkacz played on Saturday with Novak Djokovic.

Serb is a living tennis legend. At the age of 38, Djoković can still enchant. Although you have to give up that winning tournaments is getting harder and more and more. Currently, the Serbian “hunts” to win the Grand Slam tournament number 25 in his career and the jubilee of the Tournament Triumph for the hundredth time (!) In its very rich achievements. Djoković had a good opportunity to do so in 2025, reaching the ATP 1000 final in Miami. In Florida, however, the experienced tennis player managed to beat, quite unexpectedly, Czech Jakub Meniek, after two tie-breaks.

For Hurkacz, the Saturday final in Geneva was the twelfth of this type in his career, looking at the Tour ATP. The Pole gathered eight titles, for the last time triumphing in April 2024 at the Portuguese earth courts in Estoril. Later, Hurkacz was in the final again, but he lost on the grass in Halle (June 2024) with Jannik Sinner.

A Pole one step after Novak Djokovic. A great performance of “Hubi”!

What was the final in Geneva? Hurkacz lasted a few really key moments for a long time. Looking only at the result, these most important moments are not visible, they are not so obvious. But the fact is, even having a legend on the other side, a Pole was able to delight his play, regardless of his rival’s pressure.

Examples of such key moments? The fifth game of the first set, exit from 15:40 at your website. In addition, the situation from the state of 5: 5, when it seemed that after the game at 6: 5 for a Pole, there is a tie-break closer than winning in the set. Hurkacz, however, managed to use his only moment about Break Point. Although Djoković himself helped the Pole, at the last point, committing … a double service error.

However, it should be remembered that in the previous seven matches of Djokovic with Hurkacz … Serb won seven times. The Pole had to be on guard, wanting to reverse the wrong card in the eighth clash with the legend. The second batch was in a similar scenario, i.e. they both guarded their website again, and Hurkacz went out for eleven games to lead 6: 5, with a certain perspective of TIE-BREAKA. As it turned out, it really happened. This time the Serb did not release this opportunity.

Tie-break began with 0: 2, with a mini-break to the disadvantage of Hurkacz. The Pole failed to find a response to several exchanges played with maximum risk by Djokovic’s wall. Effect? Losing 2: 7 and equalizing the match after two hours and two minutes.

Hurkacz, however, did not break down in a tie-break, a third, decisive set, starting with a rapid break of Serb. After a few minutes, there were 2-0 on the score board in favor of a Pole. The audience, mostly in favor of winning the legend (Djoković also has a family in Geneva), with admiration watched Hurkacz’s effective game.

Again, a very important fragment was more or less the center of the set, at 4: 3 for Hurkacz with a break, the Pole made a banal mistake under the net (0:15), after a while a double service error (0:30) and it got 15:40. Djoković did not waste such a chance, confirming his great sports class once again. Nothing was left of the initial supply of “Hubi” (4: 4).

The Pole, however, held himself to the end, leveling 5: 5 after a good service game of Djokovic, additionally built by an earlier break. And after another few minutes at ultimately 6: 6, so TIE-BREAKA number 2, looking at the Saturday final in Geneva. The last game of a three -hundred match began almost even after three hours of play.

It started from 1: 2, again with a mini-break in favor of Serb. Hurkacz, however, made up for the losses (2: 2) with precise Volley under the net. But what, however, since the Pole also multiplied his own mistakes, as a consequence closing hope for success (2: 6). Djoković closed the match like a grand master, a service ace, winning the hundredth ATP title in his career.

After the finals, Hurkacz was shown for a long time, how the broken he looked at the court. After a while, the Pole put on a towel on his head, knowing how close he was in Geneva. However, Djoković won his tournament number 100 in his career.

It is worth adding that soon in the French capital, during Roland Garros, a big challenge is already welcoming Hurkacz. The Wrocław rival will be considered the greatest talent of recent years in men’s tennis, Joao Fonseca. The Brazilian is only 18 years old, but attracts the attention of the tennis world. In combination with Hurkacz, which is on the erection wave, you can now rub your hands at such a start in the first round on Parisian Mączka.
