“How to Avoid Huge Energy Increases.” Cybercriminals want to cause panic among Poles
The government is warning against fake text messages promising to avoid energy increases. Fraudsters extort data and their actions are aimed at causing panic among recipients.
The Ministry of Climate and Environment has issued a warning against fake text messages and websites that promise “how to avoid huge energy increases.” Fraudsters try to extort personal data in this way.
“These are disinformation activities intended to cause panic,” says the ministry's press release.
“Clicking on unverified links and false information about how to avoid drastic increases is one of the ways of phishing, fraud and disinformation activities aimed at causing panic,” warns the Ministry of Climate and Environment.
Cybercriminals scare people with energy prices
The warning applies to links sent in text messages, as well as graphics and social media posts that use images of famous people to gain the trust of recipients. Fraudsters try to take advantage of public fear of energy price increases and the lack of full knowledge about it.
“Graphics and posts with the slogan 'how to avoid huge energy increases' appeared on social media. We would like to remind you that from July 1, 2024, the Act on the temporary limitation of prices for electricity, natural gas and system heat and on the energy voucher will come into force” – we read in the ministry's announcement.
