At least 20 people were injured in a head-on collision of passenger trains in Slovakia. A rescue operation is underway on site.

A serious collision occurred on Monday near the town of Jablonov nad Turňou in the Slovak Košice Region. Two trains collided there head-on. The police said that the collision occurred in front of the tunnel. “The police are securing the accident site, coordinating the activities of emergency services and directing the movement of people in the area,” police informed on Facebook. Passengers left the trains on their own whenever possible.

Nearby hospitals are preparing to receive trauma patients. Slovak rescue services announced on Facebook that they had sent a helicopter and ambulances to the site.
