He set out to climb Śnieżka, but never made it. Tragedy on the Trail
There were some drastic scenes on the way to Śnieżka. One of the tourists who set off on the trail suffered a cardiac arrest. Other hikers rushed to his aid.
A tragic event took place on the trail leading to Śnieżka. The incident took place on Wednesday – one of the tourists who were hiking towards the top of the mountain suffered a cardiac arrest. The situation was reported by the Mountain Volunteer Search and Rescue, Karkonosze branch. The signal reached the rescuers after 12:30.
A group from Jelenia Góra and Karpacz was called. “The first to arrive at the scene was a GOPR rescuer who was in the area with an automatic external defibrillator (AED), which was taken from the Śnieżka Observatory,” GOPR reported on social media.
When the rescuers arrived at the scene, they found the injured tourist surrounded by witnesses to the incident. Among them was a random doctor. The tourists tried to help the man by performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
An LPR helicopter landed on Śnieżka
A few dozen minutes later, at 1:18 p.m., an Air Ambulance helicopter landed on the mountaintop. They took over the tourist who needed help and continued the rescue operation. Unfortunately, they were unable to save him.
In the entry, the rescuers reported that after the end of the operation, GOPR helped the family of the injured person to get down and organized the transport of the body to the rescue station in Karpacz. After 5:00 p.m., it was handed over to the appropriate services.
GOPR emphasized that despite the tragic ending, the importance of quick action and first aid provided by witnesses to the event should be emphasized. “The early initiation of cardiopulmonary resuscitation by tourists present on site was a key element of the “chain of survival” and is always extremely important,” the rescuers wrote, adding that even if the final outcome is not always successful, such actions can significantly increase the chances of saving a life in similar situations.
