He is to pay back £5,000 in benefits. The media blames officials
A disabled woman is to return the equivalent of PLN 25,000. PLN benefit. The office made a mistake in its calculations, but the 58-year-old woman was charged with repaying the debt. The British BBC News reports on the shocking case.
Yvonne Buckley, 58, was ordered to pay back more than £5,000. pounds to the account of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP – editor’s note). This was done by explaining that she had received benefits that had been incorrectly calculated. Importantly, as the BBC points out, the woman was entitled to them.
The 58-year-old received allegedly inflated benefits between November 2021 and August 2023 as part of the general benefit, which is paid in the British Isles to people who are in financial difficulties and have trouble supporting themselves.
Great Britain. He must pay back £5,000
At that time, the disabled woman supported herself by doing odd jobs. Although in her opinion the benefit she received was too high, as she informed her many times, the officials allegedly assured her that its value was appropriate, including: due to her disability.
“I really thought it was a lot of money, but they said even though I was working I was entitled to it because I was disabled, so I didn’t think about it at all,” she told the BBC. She added that she always informed DWP about any changes in her employment and often asked whether she was receiving too much benefit.
The situation has changed over the last year. The Department of Work and Pensions demanded that the woman repay her benefits. In one of the letters she received, she was informed that she was receiving more benefits than she was actually entitled to.
“In 2023, I was informed that I should pay back £4,600, because even if I had not defrauded DWP, I should repay the debt, because it is the law,” says an angry Yvonne Buckley, explaining that the officials admitted that the mistake was on their side. .
He wants to pay back £1 a month
As it turned out, after the British woman’s appeal, the department waived the need for her to repay the debt. As the BBC explains, the 58-year-old was awarded up to £350 in compensation. However, her joy did not last long. A month ago, the DWP again demanded that the woman repay the debt – this time for £5,086.
“I was shocked, it caused me a lot of difficulty, but I guess I’ll have to pay it back,” Yvonne Buckley told the BBC. However, she added that she intended to make repayments of one pound a month.
