He entered the Wawel Dragon and fire appeared. A shocking recording
This seemingly funny incident could have even ended tragically. The man climbed onto the symbol of Krakow – then the sculpture burst into flames.
Five decades ago, a magnificent bronze sculpture was placed in Krakow. The work by Bronisław Chromy (an artist who is also a renowned painter and illustrator) depicts the legendary Wawel Dragon.
This is one of the biggest tourist attractions – everyone who visits the capital of Małopolska for the first time includes a walk to the iconic hill on the Krakowski Bridge in their plans. Even those who have never seen the sculpture with their own eyes know perfectly well that it (literally) bursts into flames.
Among others therefore, you are not allowed to climb the Wawel Dragon – even just for fun. This place is under constant city monitoring, and such behavior may be considered as violating the rules of order. The services may issue a fine to the perpetrator. If the sculpture was damaged, the situation would be even worse – the prosecutor’s office could classify such an act as destruction of a monument, which (according to the law) is punishable by up to eight years in prison.
Despite all this, there was recently a daredevil who decided to climb the legendary dragon standing at the exit from the Dragon’s Den. The incident was filmed – the recording was made available by Medium Kraków dla Młodych.
Cracow. Someone climbed the Wawel Dragon. Suddenly there was fire. The police got acquainted with the loud recording
The local website published the video yesterday (Tuesday – July 14). The video quickly became popular on Facebook, as well as other platforms – e.g. X and TikTok.
In the video we see the young man fiddling with his hand near the mouth of the Wawel Dragon, from which a large flame bursts out after a while. It is unknown whether he did something to cause it or if it happened on its own. It is also unknown whether he suffered any injuries – you can see him climbing down from the sculpture, so if so, they were probably not serious. However, everything could have ended much worse – e.g. extensive and deep burns to the face, hands or neck.
KdW contacted representatives of the services. The press officer of the Municipal Police Headquarters in Krakow – Commissioner Piotr Szpiech – said that the uniformed officers “did not receive an official report about a person climbing the sculpture near Wawel.” The source’s findings show that “the case has been redirected to the appropriate police station, which will decide on further operational actions.”
It is possible that the identity of the person in the video will be determined and they will face consequences – assuming they are of age.
