Has the US decided on soldiers in Poland? Gen. Gromadziński about the causes of the problem
The US decision to suspend the rotation of soldiers to Poland may be the beginning of greater cuts in the US army, warns General Jarosław Gromadziński.
The American army is unlikely to decide to send another armored brigade of about 4,000 to Poland. soldiers. The head of the Ministry of National Defense reassured that it was only about reorganization, but General Jarosław Gromadziński believed that the matter had much deeper roots.
The former Eurocorps commander emphasizes that this does not mean a reduction in the number of American soldiers in Poland. Instead of a new brigade, the military who are already stationed on the Vistula River will stay in the country for longer. Their stay is to be extended by approximately nine months.
Has the war in Iran hit the Pentagon’s budget?
According to the general, the reason for the decision are the financial problems of the US Department of Defense. As he explained in an interview with Onet, military activities related to the conflict in Iran were financed from the current Pentagon budget.
According to Gromadziński, the current deficit of the US army may amount to as much as $4 to $6 billion. In such a situation, the Donald Trump administration began to look for savings, and one of the easiest ways is to limit costly military rotations between continents.
The general points out that transporting the entire brigade across the Atlantic involves huge logistical costs. In his opinion, Poland can only be the beginning of a broader process. In the coming months, similar decisions may also apply to other American bases around the world.
The number of soldiers and the security of the region
Eastern Europe still remains one of the key areas related to the war in Ukraine. Gen. Gromadziński admits that signals coming from the US may also translate into limiting some activities in this region.
At the same time, he emphasizes that the US is still guided by its own hierarchy of priorities, so aid for Ukraine may remain one of the most important financing goals.
The general also warns about the problems of the Ministry of National Defense
The conversation also touched upon the financial situation of the Polish Ministry of Defense. According to General Gromadziński, as many as 60 percent Ministry of National Defense expenses are currently to be used to repay loans related to the modernization of the army.
Despite the disturbing signals, the general cools down the mood and appeals for calm. In his opinion, it is possible that the Pentagon will find additional funds and the current situation will turn out to be only a temporary budget problem.
