Hand luggage on an EU plane. It will not please passengers at all
In the assumption of a change regarding hand luggage proposed by the European Union, they are to end the chaos at the briefing. However, they will not make us bring more luggage on board.
Over the years, the policy of cheap hand luggage lines was getting sharper. Do you still remember when a few years ago passengers in Ryanair or Wizz Air were entitled to a small cabin suitcase in the ticket price? For some time these are only new, small suitcases or backpacks with specific dimensions. The exception are, among others Polish LOT LOT lines, which as part of each tariff allow you to take a suitcase of up to 8 kg.
In addition, airlines, mainly Ryanair, check very thoroughly if the luggage does not exceed the permissible dimension by at least 1 cmwhich results in an additional charge in the amount of up to PLN 250, often more expensive than the ticket. In addition, non -uniform rules regarding the maximum dimensions mean that passengers using different lines get lost in the rules, and at the briefing there are nervous situations.
What about hand luggage fees? The European Union offers rules
On Thursday, the ministers of the European Union transport proposed a solution that goes on hand to the airlines. BBC informs that it is about standardized sizes for free hand luggage.
Ministers want travelers to have one free personal item with dimensions up to 40x30x15 cm (including wheels and handles) or one that could fit under the seat of the aircraft.
Currently, the maximum dimension of free hand luggage in Ryanair is 40x25x20 cm, so it’s easy to see that there is no difference. The European Consumer Organization (BEUC), associating 45 independent consumer organizations from 32 countries, has recognized that such a proposal entitles air carriers to “charging fees for hand luggage of reasonable sizes”.
The suitcases in the ticket price will not come back
For other bags of luggage, the line may request a fee, although it is not said that it will exercise this right. Ryanair accepted the proposed changes with satisfaction. “If the airlines were forced to take into account additional hand luggage as part of the basic tariff, this would limit the choice and would raise the prices of air tickets for all passengers
which would be harmful to consumers, “said the carrier.
The new proposal will become applicable law if it is approved by the European Parliament.
