Group layoffs in 156 companies. Is there anything to worry about?
Currently 19.4 thousand employees in 156 companies are subject to group layoffs. This is an increase of 600 people compared to the previous month and as many as 3.4 thousand. compared to the situation last year.
The Central Statistical Office recently reported that in August the average employment in the enterprise sector decreased by 0.5%. year to year. The largest employment cuts concerned companies involved in industrial processing and construction, while most service sectors increased employment. At the same time, the demand for labor is still moderate – we read in the “Tygodnik Polskiego Instytut Ekonomiczny”.
Labor market. Is there anything to worry about?
The unemployment rate in Poland remains stable – unemployment recorded in July and August was 5 percent, i.e. 0.1 point higher. percent more than in June (data from the Ministry of Labor), and the unemployment rate calculated by Eurostat has been 2.9% for several months.
So is there anything to worry about? For the first time in over a year, slightly more companies plan to lay off than to hire employees – according to PIE research for the Monthly Business Conditions Index. At the beginning of September, 10 percent companies declared that they intend to reduce employment in the next three months, and 9 percent companies planned to hire new employees.
The vast majority of companies (81%) do not expect any changes in the number of employees. Most entities planning to reduce employment were among large companies – as many as 16 percent, and only 6 percent. planned to hire new employees. At the same time, according to data from the Central Statistical Office, the scale of group layoffs increased – at the end of July this year. 22 companies declared 4.9 thousand layoffs. employees, which means that in total there were 19.4 thousand at the end of July. reported group layoffs in 156 workplaces.
This means an increase of 600 people compared to the previous month and as many as 3.4 thousand. compared to the situation last year. The situation was best in medium-sized companies, where 16 percent planned to accept new people, and 10 percent – layoffs.
Median salary – this is how much you earn in Poland
Recent weeks have also brought interesting data on earnings in Poland – specifically the median. This is a parameter that can be read as meaning that half of the employees earn more and the other half earn less – so it shows “middle wages”. The data published in September concerns March, so at the beginning they are not entirely up-to-date, but they still provide a better understanding of Poles’ earnings than the average salary reported every month.
What have we learned from them?

The median (i.e. middle value) of wages in Poland in March was PLN 6,549 per full-time basis. This means that half of the employees received lower salaries and the other half received higher salaries.

The median wage is higher for men: it was PLN 6,770 in March.

In March, members of this club were entitled to receive remuneration of at least PLN 14,016 gross, i.e. PLN 9,885 under the employment contract. The Central Statistical Office does not take into account legal bases for earning money other than full-time employment in its calculations, but as an interesting fact, we will add that with such a gross amount, the net amount is PLN 10,124 for a mandate contract, PLN 11,373 for a business activity (B2) and as much as PLN 12,670 for a contract for employment. work.
