GPS interference in the Baltic Sea region. Poles complain about problems
The satellite signal is constantly disrupted, which is particularly felt by residents of northern and eastern Poland. Recently, however, the phenomenon has become more intense. The Russians are to blame for everything, they attacked the Ukrainians, and at the same time they are waging a hybrid war with the Baltic countries.
Every now and then we hear about incidents related to interference with the GPS signal (satellite navigation system). Ship crews and drone pilots complain that, among other things, in the Baltic Sea region or in Warmia and Mazury, there are problems with GPS, which often makes work impossible (e.g. unmanned aerial vehicles that cannot function without navigation simply fall to the ground – pilots often do not know where their UAV is).
Another example, mentioned in the text by the editors of the NaTemat portal, took place last year – when the crew of a passenger plane flying from Spain (Alicante) to Poland (Bydgoszcz) was redirected to Poznań due to GPS problems.
GPS interference is a serious threat, including: for aviation
The Tricity portal found that six drones were lost in one weekend – in the Drone Tower application. Most of the incidents occurred in the vicinity or area of Gdańsk, Sopot and Gdynia (and one, among others, in Krynica Morska).
On the GPS Jam portal, you can track information about possible signal disruptions in real time. At this point, “strong disruptions” (i.e. above 10% – the area marked in red) were found, among others. in the area of Grudziądz, Iława, Kwidzyn, Elbląg, Starogard Gdański, Gdańsk, Sopot, Gdynia, Kościerzyna, Lębork, Słupsk, Wejherowo and Łeba.
Former head of the Ministry of Interior and Administration: Russia had a hand in this
NaTemat indicated that the interference most likely comes from the Königsberg region (from the bases located there).
Problems with GPS were commented on in 2025 by the then Minister of Interior and Administration, Tomasz Siemoniak. – There is no doubt that Russia had a hand in this – he said on Polsat News. He pointed out that the GPS signal is a “critical element of armed conflicts.”
