Google will look into your messages. The new Gemini functions are controversial

Google introduces a change: Gemini will gain access to the application on the phone without asking for permission. Check from when and how to turn it off.
Google introduces significant changes in the operation of the Gemini application. Android users have already received notifications about the planned update, which will enter into force on July 7, 2025. After this date, Gemini will be able to access applications such as phone, news, WhatsApp or Tools, regardless of whether the Gemini Apps Activity function is active.
Automatic switching on
The company informs that the changes are aimed at facilitating the interaction of the assistant with the device. The problem is that the new feature will be turned on automatically, without the user’s question for permission. To deactivate it, change the settings in the application manually. If the user has already turned off these options earlier, they will remain inactive.
The change is part of a broader trend of artificial intelligence agentization, which involves transforming simple chatbots into autonomous agents. New AI systems, such as Gemini, are to perform tasks outside the chat window – including on websites and in mobile applications. Their goal is to increase efficiency and relieve the user in everyday activities, e.g. by booking tickets, fill out forms or respond to messages.
Content analysis
The new functionality means that Gemini will be able to analyze the content from the application, including SMSs and messages from messengers, without a visible warning. In theory, such action is to help the assistant to better support the user in everyday tasks, e.g. by proposing answers or offers based on the context of the conversation.
Google emphasizes that user data is anonymized and does not go to external companies or are not used to train AI models. However, people more sensitive to privacy can consider these changes to be controversial. In this situation, the best solution is to turn off unnecessary functions yourself.
