Germans are following in the footsteps of Poles. Drivers will be happy
The German government coalition today announced a plan to reduce fuel tax by 17 eurocents per liter. Drivers will save a total of over EUR 1.5 billion.
The CDU and SPD, the parties that make up the German ruling coalition, announced on Monday a plan to reduce fuel tax by 17 euro cents per liter. Estimates of the Ministry of Labor show that thanks to this reduction, refueling customers will save approximately EUR 1.6 billion on fuel.
Germany is lowering fuel prices
Recently, there has been a discussion in the coalition regarding ways to reduce fuel prices. At the beginning of April, a regulation on fuel prices came into force, according to which stations can increase prices only once a day at 12:00 (reductions can be introduced at any time). However, the Social Democrats considered this solution to be insufficient. However, they proposed imposing a tax on extraordinary profits on the energy sector, which was not warmly welcomed by the CDU and Chancellor Friedrich Merz himself. The Christian Democrats, however, proposed increasing tax relief for people commuting to work.
The solution announced today is to be valid for two months. The Germans are therefore following in the footsteps of the Poles. Let us remind you that the government package “Fuel Prices Lower” (CPN) has been in force in our country since the end of March. It assumes, among others: reduction of the VAT rate on fuels from 23%. up to 8%, a reduction in excise duty to the minimum EU levels (by PLN 29/l for petrol and PLN 28/l for diesel), as well as the introduction of a maximum retail price for fuels.
Despite the ceasefire in the Middle East, the government intends to maintain the package, which means that refueling customers will pay less than in March.
The escalation of the situation in this region at the turn of February and March resulted in a sharp increase in fuel prices in Germany. At the end of last week, the average price of gasoline in Germany was EUR 2,155 per liter, or just over PLN 9. In turn, the price of diesel dropped to EUR 2.419 per liter, which is the equivalent of PLN 10.29. This drop ended a series of 12 consecutive price increases for this fuel. At one point the price was 2,443 euros per liter, exceeding the previous record set in 2022. Although diesel prices in Germany are breaking records, they are not the highest in Europe. The inglorious leader here is the Netherlands, where the price is EUR 2.80 per liter.
