Due to the “direct threat to people staying in the church”, the basilica of St. Nicholas was closed. The information was shared via social media.

“It is with the greatest pain that we inform you that for security reasons, the Basilica of St. Santa Claus will be closed until further notice. The reason for this decision of the Monastery is the poor condition of the vault, which poses a direct threat to people staying in the church,” we read on the official Facebook profile of the Dominicans in Gdańsk. The monks add that they will keep informed about the situation. They plan to reveal more details on Wednesday, October 31, at an information meeting at 10:00 a.m. in the Black Hall of the pastoral house on Pańska Street.

Additional information about the deplorable condition of the Gdańsk temple has appeared on the RMF24.pl website. In the 14th-century church, there were numerous cracks in the vault, pillars and the floor of the side nave, which is also the entrance to the Basilica of Saint Nicholas. The gdansk.pl portal adds that you can even put your hands into some of the cracks. This means that the matter is indeed serious. In such a case, conservation work may cost millions of zlotys. “We are asking for prayers for our community and a quick solution to the problem in the construction of the vault,” the Dominicans wrote in a statement.
