Former athlete lost his life in a tragic fire. “This is how we will remember you”
Last weekend, a tragic fire occurred in Poznań. One of the fatalities was the firefighter Patryk Michalski, a former athlete.
The first reports of a fire in a tenement house on Kraszewskiego Street in Poznań’s Jeżyce district appeared just before midnight, on the night from Saturday to Sunday. The report of a burning basement was received by the fire department at exactly 11:50 p.m. The first units arrived on the scene five minutes later.

While the fire department was conducting a reconnaissance, an explosion occurred in the basement of the building. As a result of the fire, three civilians and 11 firefighters were injured, and two more were reported missing. In the early morning, the firefighting operation turned into a rescue operation, and the firefighters were joined by a special search and rescue group.
On Sunday morning, the worst-case scenario was confirmed. “Two firefighters died today during a firefighting operation in Poznań,” Prime Minister Donald Tusk said. “Honour to their memory! They are true heroes of our times,” the politician wrote on social media.
The head of government announced that the families of the victims would be cared for by the state.
Former athlete Patryk Michalski has died
One of the tragically deceased firefighters was Firefighter Patryk Michalski. In the past, he was quite well known for his athletics competitions, where, as a youth athlete, he was a real talent.
“My heart breaks. Javelin thrower, Champion. Firefighter, Hero. Our Boy, Patryk. That’s how we’ll remember you. Rest in peace. Condolences to your Family and Loved Ones,” we read on the UKS Cyprianka Facebook profile.
Tragically deceased Michalski was definitely the best in track and field in javelin throw. He broke Polish records in junior categories, among others.
A fire broke out suddenly in a tenement house in Poznań. The residents left their homes as they were. They left all their belongings, which were consumed by the fire a moment later.
