Extreme rainfall hit the Italian island. Some parts of Sicilian cities were under water.

The DANA phenomenon approaching Spain is not the only disturbing information coming from southern Europe today. Sicily is also facing the dangerous element, especially the province of Catania, which is popular among tourists. Terrifying recordings published on social media by injured residents of the region show the extent of the tragedy. Rushing streams carry away cars and destroy houses. Since the morning, several hundred fire brigade interventions have taken place.

Another flood in Italy

Italy, like Spain, is defending itself against floods once again this year. In the summer, the north of the country was the most affected by the extreme phenomenon. Now one of the southern islands is facing the upcoming cataclysm. Storms accompanied by heavy rains in recent days have led to rapid flooding of streets in many Sicilian towns and villages. The roads are impassable, and cars parked in front of houses flow with the current of the streams and even end up in the sea. Since the morning, firefighters present at the site have made over 100 interventions. People are asking the services for help, but fortunately for now there is no information about any people missing as a result of the disaster. Several people have already been evacuated from their homes. Schools and public institutions were closed.

It won’t stop raining

There will be no rainfall in the Catania region today and tomorrow. This will have a major impact on transport between popular tourist cities such as Catania, Syracuse and Messina. The Civil Protection Inspectorate appeals to those staying in Sicily temporarily and permanently to limit their movement. The entire island is under a second level alert (orange), which may last until the end of the week.
