Failure at a large bank. Customers have lost access to their money

On Friday, Santander Bank Polska customers encountered difficulties accessing their bank accounts. According to the downdetector.pl service, the number of failure reports has increased dramatically, which may be related to the global failure of Microsoft’s cloud services.

A series of technical glitches that began Friday have disrupted services around the world, from airlines to the London Stock Exchange. The problems have affected the US, Asia and Europe, with Microsoft pointing to an outage of its online services as the cause. The Australian government and media have suggested it may be due to a recent cybersecurity update by CrowdStrike.

Failure in Santander

At Santander Bank Polska, problems began before 8 a.m. Customers reported that funds on their cards were blocked twice during online purchases, and the order status remained unpaid. Others reported card payments declined at terminals, even though the money was debited from the account. Downdetector.pl reports that the majority of reports (76 percent) concern card payment problems.

However, the bank reported that out of almost 6 million customers, only 163 reports concerned problems. Ewa Krawczyk from Santander’s press office assured money.pl that despite the problems with the hotline, the cards work and customers can log in to electronic and mobile banking. However, there may be occasional difficulties in mobile banking.

The position of the Minister of Digital Affairs

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Affairs Krzysztof Gawkowski assured that critical infrastructure systems in Poland are operating smoothly, despite the global failure of Microsoft systems. Polish services responsible for cybersecurity are monitoring the situation and providing ongoing information on the state of affairs.

“The global failure of Microsoft systems is under constant observation by Polish services responsible for cybersecurity. At the moment there is no reason to worry,” wrote Minister Gawkowski.

Despite the reported problems, banks are trying to resolve failures on an ongoing basis, while ensuring that access to accounts and cards is possible, although temporary difficulties may occur.
