Ewa Swoboda won a medal for Poland! An athlete’s tears at the finish line
Ewa Swoboda is European vice-champion in the 100-meter race. The Pole thus repeated the result she achieved at the European Championships in 2024.
The Polish athlete crossed the finish line with a time of 11.02 seconds. This gave her a silver medal, which is certainly a solid result for the Pole, with minimal disappointment. The athlete was in good shape, which even made her one of the favorites for the gold medal at the event in Birmingham.
Unfortunately, this was not achieved. But the European vice-championship – the second in her career after the result in 2024 in Rome – is also a great success for the Polish representative. Swoboda did not hide tears of emotion after realizing what result she had achieved.
The winner was Amy Hunt, a representative of the hosts, with a time of 11.00 seconds.
It is worth adding that Swoboda will also take part in the relay race. The Pole will compete in the 4×100 meters.

The first day of the European Athletics Championship 2026 was not particularly kind to the Polish representatives.
Certainly the biggest surprise was what happened in the morning series. He lost in the qualifying round, among others. European champion (2024) and Olympic champion (2021) – hammer thrower Wojciech Nowicki. Unfortunately, health problems that the Polish multi-medalist has been struggling with over the last dozen or so months did not allow him to fight on an equal footing with the competition.
What’s worse, however, was that there was only one place left to qualify for the final. Nowicki took 13th place. Let us add that Paweł Fajdek qualified for the finals, and among the hammer throwers was the legendary Anita Włodarczyk and the European Championship debutant – Aleksandra Śmiech.
Medal hopes apart from Swoboda’s start? It could be combined with the 4×400-meter mixed relay.
Ultimately, however, it turned out that the Polish team: Maksymilian Szwed, Alicja Wrona-Kutrzepa, Remigiusz Zazula and Natalia Bukowiecka – took 4th place. Bukowiecka, who finished, performed particularly well, taking the team to fourth place. On this day, however, the loss to the top three medalists was, overall, too clear.
