Everyone has heard about this Polish street. They want to include it on the list of monuments

Krupówki

The fight for the status of Krupówki continues. The Małopolska Monuments Conservator rejected the application for the famous street, but the Society for the Protection of Monuments in Zakopane is still counting on the entry.

Will Krupówki finally be included in the list of monuments? After the first candidacy was rejected, another hope appeared – the Society for the Protection of Monuments in Zakopane appealed against the decision. The authors of the application emphasize that the tourist promenade best documents the changes that the capital of the Tatra Mountains has undergone over the years. Meanwhile, the Małopolska Monuments Conservator argues that this area has never formed a coherent historical urban system, and the current character of the street differs significantly from the original spatial structure and aesthetics.

Krupówki is much more than a promenade

Everyone who has visited Zakopane has walked along Krupówki Street at least once. The main promenade in the city, stretching from the intersection of Nowotarska and Kościeliska to Aleja 3 Maja, is more than just an address – it is years of history that have been recorded in architecture. “It is the diversity of architectural forms, resulting from the history of Zakopane and the influence of different styles, that creates the unique character of Krupówki. It cannot be treated as a disadvantage, but as an added value to the development of the city,” says Agata Nowakowska-Wolak from the Zakopane branch of the Society for the Protection of Monuments. The organization intends to fight for the granting of the desired status with the Małopolska Monuments Conservator.

“The conservator proposed that the city authorities introduce additional forms of protection in local spatial development plans, including establishing rules regarding the shape and height of buildings and architectural details,” writes the Local Government Portal.

The architecture of Zakopane is controversial

Not only the architecture of Krupówki, but also the entire Zakopane, provokes discussion. Recently, the residents’ reluctance was aroused by the newly opened Górski Diament hotel located at Piłsudskiego Street. Although the facility tries to look expensive and exclusive, according to some Internet users it is the quintessence of kitsch, which only deepens the image crisis of the capital of the Polish Tatra Mountains.
