Everyone goes to the lakes, but they miss this pearl of Masuria. This is a unique facility

Sanktuarium w Świętej Lipce

Święta Lipka delights with its baroque basilica and the famous organ with moving figures. It is one of the most valuable monuments of Warmia and Mazury.

Masuria is associated primarily with lakes, sailing and resting in the bosom of nature. However, between Reszel and Kętrzyn there is a place that is also worth visiting during your holiday. Święta Lipka attracts pilgrims and tourists interested in history, architecture and music.

The Marian sanctuary located in a small village is called the “Częstochowa of the North” and the “pearl of the baroque”. In 2018, the entire complex was recognized as a Historic Monument.

Święta Lipka is a real pearl of the Baroque

The central point of the sanctuary is the Basilica of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The temple is surrounded by cloisters with corner chapels, and the complex also includes a Jesuit monastery. A richly decorated wrought iron gate leads to the courtyard.

The current complex was created from the end of the 17th century to the first half of the 18th century. The church was consecrated in 1693, but its furnishing and decoration continued for decades.

Inside, attention is drawn to the illusionistic frescoes by Jan Maciej Meyer, gilding, sculptures and the three-story main altar with a painting of Our Lady of Świętolipska. As the National Heritage Institute emphasizes, this is the only Jesuit pilgrimage site of this type preserved in Poland.

The biggest attraction? Organ with movable figures

One of the most recognizable elements of the basilica is the baroque organ built in 1719–1721 by Jan Joshua Mosengel from Królewiec. The instrument impresses with its sound and richly decorated case.

Figures of angels placed on it move during the presentation. Some play instruments, others turn or bow. Short concerts combined with a demonstration of the mechanism take place several times a day.

According to information published by the sanctuary in Święta Lipka, the presentation lasts several minutes. Admission is free, but voluntary donations are collected from participants.

The legend of the convict and the figure hanging on a linden tree

The beginnings of the Marian cult in Święta Lipka date back to the Middle Ages. Its existence was first confirmed in sources in 1473, but local tradition indicates an even earlier origin of the sanctuary.

According to legend, Mary appeared to a condemned prisoner held in Kętrzyn. The man carved a figure of the Virgin Mary and Child and then was unexpectedly freed.

On the way to Reszel, he hung the sculpture on a roadside linden tree. Soon, miraculous properties were attributed to it, and the place attracted pilgrims. The name of the town comes from this history.

The first chapel was destroyed in the 16th century. The cult was restored at the beginning of the 17th century, and the Jesuits took over the care of the sanctuary.

How to plan a visit to Święta Lipka?

The sanctuary is located on the road connecting Reszel with Kętrzyn. The tour can be combined with a visit to the medieval Reszel, Kętrzyn or Wolf’s Lair.

From May to September, the basilica is open every day from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and the sanctuary museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Organ presentation hours vary depending on the day of the week, so it is worth checking the current schedule before arriving.
