Rising water bills and increasingly frequent periods of drought mean that collecting rainwater is no longer fashionable. This is real savings and specific support from the city budget. One of the Polish cities has just launched a program in which residents can receive up to PLN 2,000 in subsidies, and communities and cooperatives – up to PLN 10,000.

Time is key. Recruitment is already underway and funds are limited.

Why is rainwater profitable? Hard numbers instead of ecological slogans

Poland has been struggling with the problem of hydrological drought for years, i.e. long-term decline in the level of surface and groundwater. In practice, this means increasing costs of maintaining water and sewage infrastructure and, consequently, higher bills for residents.

Collecting rainwater allows you to:

  • reduce water consumption from the water supply network,

  • reduce water and sewage bills,

  • relieve storm sewage during heavy rainfall,

  • reduce the risk of local flooding.

The collected rainwater can be easily used for:

  • watering the garden and lawn,

  • washing car,

  • flushing toilets,

  • cleaning work around the house.

At current water prices, the investment in a retention system may pay off within a few seasons.

AQUAugustów – an example of a specific program with real money

One of the most specific and well-prepared programs is the initiative implemented by the Augustów City Hall.

The city launched an action AQUAugustówwhich aims to increase home water retention and improve the local microclimate. The program assumes direct financial support for residents investing in rainwater collection and infiltration systems.

How much can you get?

  • up to PLN 2,000 – for natural persons (home owners),
  • up to PLN 10,000 – for housing communities and cooperatives (depending on the number of apartments).

In practice, the subsidy can cover up to 80%. eligible investment costs.

What exactly can you get funding for?

The program includes a wide catalog of investments related to retention. The subsidy is available, among others: on:

  • purchase and installation of above-ground rainwater tanks,

  • purchase and installation of underground tanks,

  • construction of absorption wells and seepage systems,

  • installation of retention and infiltration boxes,

  • construction of rain gardens,

  • construction of outdoor reservoirs (e.g. ponds) with a rainfall collection system,

  • installation of permeable surfaces (lawn grids, gravel, aggregate).

This means that support applies not only to the classic “water barrel”, but also to more advanced retention systems with pumps and filters.

The deadlines are clear. When and how to submit an application?

The call for applications begins March 2 and it will last until November 10 this year.

Note: the program runs until funds are exhausted. If the budget is used earlier, the recruitment will end before the deadline.

How to submit an application?

Residents can:

  • submit documents in person at the Customer Service Office,

  • send the application by post,

  • submit it electronically via the ePUAP platform (e-Delivery).

Complete preparation of documentation is crucial – the lack of required annexes may delay or prevent the granting of a subsidy.

Is it really worth it?

From an economic point of view, the program significantly lowers the barrier to entry into investment. With support up to PLN 2,000:

  • the cost of a simple ground system can be reduced to a minimum,

  • more extensive underground installations become a real option,

  • the investment payback period is significantly shorter.

Additionally, the owner of the property increases its market value – the retention system is now becoming an element of the modern infrastructure of a single-family house.

Will other cities also launch similar programs?

More and more local governments in Poland are implementing local retention support programs. Municipal authorities adapt conditions to local hydrological conditions and budget possibilities.

The trend is clear: instead of waiting for central solutions, cities are taking the initiative and financing home retention systems from their own funds.

In the era of rising utility costs and more and more frequent weather extremes, rainwater is no longer an addition but is becoming an element of the home’s financial strategy. In many places, the question is no longer “is it worth it”, but “will you make it before the funds run out?”
