Evacuation of thousands of people. In Spain, a phenomenon known as DANA will occur
The Spanish Civil Protection Agency warns of extreme rain in the province of Malaga. This is related to the weather phenomenon DANA.
DANA is Spanish for “depresión aislada en niveles altos”, which means a storm that appears over a given area due to the disconnection of cold air from the main mass flow at high altitudes. He then wanders on his own.
When it encounters warm and moist air at lower levels, it can produce violent storms, heavy rainfall (and sometimes even hail).
Spain. Red and orange alerts. Schools are closed and evacuations are underway
The DANA phenomenon is present in the Mediterranean region – mainly in Spain. Recently, floods swept through the country. However, there are many indications that a repeat is about to happen. According to the British television station BBC, thousands of people were evacuated from their homes in the Costa del Sol region in southern Spain after the announcement of a red weather alert.
Several other regions of the country are also on alert, as they already know that heavy rains will soon roll in and air temperatures will drop. The British Broadcasting Corporation reminds that so far the floods that occurred a few weeks ago have claimed the lives of more than 220 people.
The “red alert” currently also applies to Catalonia (mainly the coast near Tarragona). Schools are closed throughout the province of Malaga. The shutters in supermarkets have been closed. The BBC reports that the Andalusian authorities have decided to evacuate three thousand people who live near the Guadalhorce River.
The International Tennis Federation also postponed the opening match of the Billie Jean King Cup between Spain and Poland. It will take place on Friday morning – informed the captain of the national team, Dawid Celt.
But that’s not all, precautions are also being taken in other parts of Spain. The orange alert applies to parts of the Valencia and Andalusia regions, as well as the Balearic Islands. There may be rainfall and strong storms. This alert is not much less serious than red – it means “a degree of threat to normal operations.” School and sports activities were canceled in Valencia. Sandbags were found near the city of Aldaia.
Flood in Spain
At the end of October, heavy rains swept through Spain. This led to flooding in the southern and eastern parts of the country, stretching from Malaga to Valencia.
The last time a disaster of this scale occurred in the country was in 1996.
