Epochal change. This is the end of problems for many Poles

USB-C ma zostać standardem ładowania w Unii Europejskiej

From December 28, 2024, almost all electronic devices in Poland will have to support charging via USB-C.

The new regulations introduce the obligation to use this standard in smartphones, laptops, tablets and other devices. What changes will the regulation bring and which devices will it cover?

USB-C No more different chargers

The new regulation published on October 15 in the Journal of Laws introduces the obligation to use USB-C as a charging standard in selected electronic devices. The changes will enter into force on December 28, 2024 and apply to almost all devices. The only exception is laptops, whose manufacturers have until April 28, 2026 to adapt.

USB-C List of devices covered by the regulation

The USB-C charging obligation will cover:

  • Smartphones and phones

  • Tablets

  • Digital cameras

  • Headphones and on-ear headphones

  • Portable speakers

  • Headsets

  • Portable game consoles

  • E-book readers

  • Keyboards and mice

  • Portable navigation systems

  • Laptops (from April 28, 2026)

New rules for charging markings

The new regulations not only impose the use of USB-C, but also specify requirements for marking the supported charging power. Manufacturers must clearly communicate the minimum and maximum charging power of the device. Devices that support charging above 15 W will have to provide full functionality of additional charging protocols, such as Power Delivery.

No charger in the box? There must be information

The regulation also introduces a requirement to inform about the presence or absence of a charger in the sales kit. The electronics will be marked with pictograms that will indicate the most important charging features. If a charger is included with the equipment, this must be clearly marked – and conversely, the absence of a power supply in the set must also be marked accordingly.

USB-C as a standard – a step in the right direction

USB-C is an increasingly common standard, but this function has not always been available in laptops. The new regulation aims to standardize the charging of electronics, which is intended to reduce the number of chargers needed and facilitate the use of devices.
