Egg figurines are being offered for up to 50,000 PLN. Have you noticed the new fad?
“I’ll trade two Harry Potter figurines for a seaside cottage,” someone wrote on the internet under the description of an auction in which a Kinder Joy figurine was listed for PLN 50,000. A joke? Maybe. But there are more ads for similarly absurd amounts.
There are things that escape people who are not interested in some narrow and unrelated matter on a daily basis. For example, we do not notice various Internet fads: some appear, others disappear. For example, you may not have been aware that figurines of characters from the Harry Potter books and films are now high on the collector’s market. At one time, they could be found in Kinder Joy chocolate eggs.
Who will buy a Harry Potter figurine for 50,000 PLN?
Today, they are put up for as much as PLN 50,000 on online auctions. Are they really worth that much and will such a sale take place? Probably not, especially since the price range is huge and the same figurine can be bought for several hundred złoty, sometimes even as much as PLN 4,000. The figurine has the code VT401K, and that’s important, because apparently there are other, similar figurines, but for collectors this one is what counts.
Sometimes we write about a coin that was in common use 50 years ago suddenly gaining value and can be sold for a few pennies. In the world of collectors, you never know, so the winners are those who have drawers full of old things that may one day become desirable.
The coin is rare because it was quickly withdrawn
Old coins have been on the rise for a long time. In 2023, a 5 złoty coin from 1932 went up for auction, with a starting price of PLN 50,000. “The rarest circulation coin of the Second Polish Republic. Beautiful and rare,” the representatives of the numismatic antiquarian encouraged in the description. They did not have to wait long for collectors to respond. Enthusiasts outbid the next bids, raising the price of the coin each time. A five złoty coin with the image of Nike was sold for PLN 150,000.
According to experts, this is the most difficult interwar coin to obtain. “In 1932, inflation was so high that the value of the silver contained in this coin exceeded its face value, so most of the mintage was withdrawn and melted down, which is why it is very rarely seen on the numismatic market today,” they argue.
