Earthquake in PZPN! Will there be a new coach of the Polish national team?

This could be a completely unexpected turn of events. Jan Urban’s job as coach of the Polish national team is said to be hanging in the balance. Why?

It turns out that the lack of promotion to the 2026 World Cup has had an impact on the perception of the work that Jan Urban has been doing for several months. The coach, who replaced Michał Probierz, was said to have fallen into disrepute with the Polish Football Association at a very difficult moment in the World Cup qualifiers. This news is reported by journalists from “Przegląd Sportowy” and Onet.

Will Jan Urban be fired? Earthquake in the Polish Football Association regarding the Polish national team

The new coach took over the duties of the most important football coach in the country just over a year ago, in mid-July 2025. Ultimately, under his guidance, the Poles managed to break into the UEFA play-off zone, but did not advance to the World Cup. This was decided by the lost away match against Sweden (2:3).

It turns out that the very fact of the lack of promotion was, to some extent, factored into the PZPN’s approach towards coach Urban’s work. The coach took over the national team at a difficult moment. However, the Polish coach had problems with the fact that he did not go to the 2026 World Cup. Moreover, Urban did not send any members of his training staff.

This was to be greatly disliked by the Polish Football Association. It is worth recalling that the World Cup featured, for example, Poland’s two rivals in the upcoming Nations League, i.e. Sweden and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

– Judging by the mood and the conversations I had, I will venture to say that if the results in the Nations League turn out to be a false start, we will enter the new year with a new coach. Jan Urban’s position is so weak (…) This is an accumulation. I don’t understand the coach very much. You lost the play-off, fly, do something. Fans attach importance to this. There were accusations against Santos that he did not travel after matches. Not going to the World Cup from the coach’s point of view is a bit of a misunderstanding – admitted Piotr Wołosik, a journalist of “Przegląd Sportowy” and Onet.

Will Urban really leave his position soon? The Polish Football Association is used to the fact that there are relatively frequent changes in the position of the coach of the Polish national team. This is somewhat disturbing, considering the complete lack of continuity with subsequent coaches’ vision of how the national team will play.
