Earthquake in Legia Warszawa. No one expected this move!

Edward Iordanescu

Legia Warszawa is only 9th in the PKO BP Ekstraklasa. Will Romanian coach Edward Iordanescu pay for the poor performance of the capital club with his job?

The Warsaw camp has been boiling since Sunday’s defeat against Zagłębie Lubin (1:3). It was difficult to predict that Legia Warszawa would be as many as nine points behind the leader Jagiellonia Białystok after 11 matches played. There is little consolation that Raków Częstochowa is in an even worse situation than the club from the capital. Legia is currently ninth and Raków eleventh in the PKO BP Ekstraklasa table.

Edward Iordanescu leaves. Is the Legia Warszawa coach’s decision final?

After a series of poor performances by Legia, its coach decided to take responsibility for the team’s results. Edward Iordanescu was supposed to be someone for the Warsaw club on whom they could build not only here and now, but also in the future. The most important goal? Fight to regain the championship title. Effect? For now, it’s poor, which is the feeling of the trainer himself, who on Monday (i.e. October 20) made himself available to the management.

Thus, it can be said almost directly that the Romanian is reconciled with his fate. And the issue of overcoming the crisis, at least for the here and now, seems difficult to imagine given the current personnel configuration. But will Iordanescu actually be fired? Legia’s managers do not have such beliefs about the Romanian.

“Michał Żewłakow and Fredi Bobić talked to the players in the morning. They supported Iordanescu. The players heard that they had to take responsibility for the results. Iordanescu is ready to leave and terminate the contract by mutual consent,” wrote the journalist of “Przegląd Sportowy” and Onet, Łukasz Olkowicz, late on Monday afternoon.

Legia has an away match on Thursday in Krakow, where the hosts are Shakhtar Donetsk players. This is a match in the UEFA Conference League. It won’t get any easier from there. This Sunday, the national classic, Legia will play at home against Lech Poznań, the current Polish champion. Then the 1/16 final of the Polish Cup and a clash with Pogoń Szczecin, which is gaining a new rhythm.

Little? There will also be another league match, again a classic, an away match against Widzew Łódź. The schedule for Legia is merciless, but it is a team that has players in its ranks who, at such a difficult moment, should take responsibility and show that it is no accident that they are in the capital, representing one of the largest brands in this part of Europe.

And the mere dismissal of Iordanescu, if it actually takes place, will not help much.
