Earthquake at top Polish club. “He received an attractive offer”

Jens Gustafsson is no longer the coach of Pogoń Szczecin. The club announced this on social media.
“Jens Gustafsson is retiring as the first coach of Pogoń Szczecin. The coach received a very attractive offer from a top-league club from Saudi Arabia, accepted it and agreed on the terms of separation with Pogoń,” we read in a statement from Pogoń Szczecin.
Gustafsson with two fourth places
Gustafsson became the coach of Pogoń Szczecin in June 2022. There were high hopes for him. The 45-year-old has, among other things, work with the Swedish youth national team on his CV. Under his leadership, the Portowcy twice finished fourth in the league. This was not a completely satisfactory result for the fans.
The Swedish coach could have made history last season when he reached the Polish Cup final with Pogoń. However, in the match for this trophy, the players from Szczecin were unable to beat Wisła Kraków and a bad taste in the mouth remained.
They explain Gustafsson’s departure
The 2024/2025 season is just getting started, and Pogoń will have to look for a new coach. The club did not want to keep Gustafsson by force when he received a very good offer from a better league.
– Jens found himself in a situation in which we could not refuse him. He received a great offer, he is going to a league where the world’s top players play. For us it is also a reason to be proud that another coach who worked in Pogoń is going to a club from a stronger league – said Pogoń’s sports department director Dariusz Adamczuk, quoted by the club’s portal.
Gustafsson led Pogoń in 87 matches, in which he recorded 44 wins, 18 draws and 25 defeats. Under his leadership, the club played in European cups, but was unable to get to the group stage. Pogoń currently holds fourth place in the PKO Ekstraklasa with seven points.
