Drivers will breathe a sigh of relief. Revolution on the A2 motorway

The General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways has started preparations for the elimination of further gates on Polish motorways. This time, the changes will cover the Greater Poland section of the A2 motorway managed by the state. Road workers announced a tender for the design and demolition of toll collection infrastructure.

The planned investment is financed by the Ministry of Finance and is another stage in moving away from the traditional toll system on state express routes. After the works are completed, drivers will use the section without the former toll collection points.

Three toll plazas to be closed down

The tender covers the preparation of documentation and the demolition of infrastructure in three locations. These are the toll collection points in Żdżary, Koło and Dąbie. However, the scope of work is not limited to removing the gates themselves.

The contractor will also have to restore the roadways to full highway parameters and implement new traffic organization. This means reconstruction of parts of the route that have been adapted to the operation of toll collection points over the years.

The opening of offers in the tender is scheduled for May 25. After selecting the contractor and signing the contract, design work and procedures related to obtaining the required permits will begin.

First documentation, then demolition

According to the schedule prepared by GDDKiA, the first stage will be the development of design documentation. This process is expected to take approximately five months. Only after its completion will the contractor be able to start construction works.

The demolition of the infrastructure itself and the adaptation of the road to new traffic conditions will take about seven months. This means that the full completion of the investment will take place only several months after signing the contract.

It’s part of a bigger plan

The removal of toll gates on the A2 motorway is not an isolated investment. In recent weeks, GDDKiA announced similar proceedings regarding the A4 motorway. At the end of April, the procedure was started for the section running through the Opole Voivodeship, and earlier for the part of the route in the Silesian Voivodeship.

These actions are part of a broader process of removing infrastructure, which has lost its original importance after the abolition of tolls for passenger cars and motorcycles on state highway sections. Ultimately, drivers are to use routes without former toll collection points, which is intended to improve traffic flow and increase travel comfort.
